From the underground clubs of New York to the top of radio and record charts, the spunky 22-year-old Lady GaGa has us head over heels and just wanting to dance.
I’ve always wanted to be a star. I feel ready for this career, and I really feel like it’s the right time in my life. I’ve devoted my life to art, and I’m living for my music. I want to keep going to make “Just Dance” number one in the U.S. I put a lot of pressure on myself because I feel I only deserve the life that I have if I surrender to my work. But I don’t do this for fame. I want to make art and have fun.
I like to go out and party…but not as much anymore. I’m spending a lot of time out on the road and staying focused. The early days of my career started when I was in middle school and I played piano or wrote music. I performed in musicals and was in jazz bands. I would perform in coffeehouses or small clubs throughout high school. After a year of college, I dropped out and decided to hardcore hustle in New York. I concentrated on making demos to give to record people. After playing nonstop, I built a fan base and created a good buzz around me. Now here I am! When I was discovered I was told that I was a ballsy Patti Smith or a female Jack White!
The song “Paparazzi,” I think best depicts my entire album. It’s an amazing pop record that is still avant-garde. The song has many layers of meaning about fame and love, and I think it’s indicative of who I am as a pop artist.

I would say my style is very futuristic. It’s fashionable and it’s modern. I like ’70s glamour and shapes. Over the past year, I decided to make graphic imagery with my wardrobe because I wanted my fashion onstage to become a prop in a way—mostly because I don’t have the money to have exciting, moving stage props! This is an underground way for me to have a theatrical show—my drama is in my fashion!
My gay fans really have me as a fan of them. I love them so much. I think I have a strong relationship with the gay community, and I like it. I try to play gay clubs once a week. It’s like home for me. I think every fan base has to be earned. The love and the trust and loyalty has to be earned. It’s not given freely. There’s nothing fake about my relationship with my gay fans. It’s very honest.
I think the situation with Prop 8 in California is fucking horseshit! We all need to keep fighting against it. We need to speak out and band together. People need to be educated about the limitations gay couples face. Some of these couples have been together for years and should be able to be a married couple. They should have that right. I was devastated when it passed. It’s stupid. We are supposed to be moving forward, not backwards. My gay fans have always been there for me, and I want them to know I am here for them! I’m going to keep playing two gay clubs a week—forever, if I can!
