Meet Neon Glitter Bliss—a band with a kick-ass name and a band you should be talking about. Mashing together dance, funk, pop and anything else they can sprinkle on top, this trio of Beth Saks, Gordy Cox and Blake Charleton have already made New York a brighter place and now look to shine beyond with their new single, “Wilted Flower.” Now, the boys of the band are talking shop with Instinct.
INSTINCT: First things first: Love the name! Who’s responsible? BLAKE: I wanted to capture the image of dance, fabulous and bright lights in three words.
You were each musical as individuals. How’d you find one another? GORDY: I went into a cabaret bar one night on a blind date, and Beth was there singing. After her performance, I went over and told her she was magical. By the end of the evening, we were dancing all over the place like 10-year-olds. Then, one day, my friend called me out of the blue and said, ‘Listen, I’m in New York to see my friends band and I want you to meet the lead singer. He’s bisexual and cute and you guys would be great to work on music together.’ Turns out it was Blake. After the show, Blake fell and hurt his leg and was taxied over to my house. The next morning, I started a drum beat, he came up with a guitar line and I recorded it before he knew what hit him. That gave birth to our song, “Crunk.”
“Wilted Flower” has caught the attention of many, and the video is even up for ultimate queer video on Logo. How does that attention and nomination feel, and is the “queer” label important to the band?
Article continues below...
GORDY: We were lucky to have an amazing cast and a focused director. And we still owe Sherry Vine for her awesome performance! The queer label is great. Even though I’m the only 100-percent gay in the band, Beth has said there is a gay man trapped inside of her.
How do you describe your music to people who haven’t heard the shiny sweetness that is Neon Glitter Bliss? GORDY: Like the entire ’80s did a bump of cocaine and then rolled around in glitter. BLAKE: I would have to say that we’re kinda like a bad-ass rainbow of jelly!
Who are some of the artists that you guys look up to? GORDY: Blake is the biggest Fleetwood Mac fan. Beth loves a lot of deep house. I just recently got into producing dance music, but really love old-school funk and R&B.
There are some similarities that can be drawn between Neon Glitter Bliss and another gay fave, the Scissor Sisters. Is that something you guys embrace or do you prefer to avoid comparisons? GORDY: Are you kidding, those guys are amazing! Compare us to them whenever, wherever you want. BLAKE: We are not greatly influenced by that band, but we do appreciate all they do in the biz.
