SUMMER LOVIN'
Rachel Bilson, Queen Of The O.C., Adds Movie Star To Her Resume
"He's really loud, and he's coming in the room, and I'm going to get made at him," Rachel Bilson warns comically over the phone, talking about her romantic co-star on both The O.C. and real life, Adam Brody. "Hey! Don't be so loud!"
This month Rachel has a lot more to yell about with her first feature film The Last Kiss hitting theaters. As her seductive character in the movie suggests, the young girl we know on TV as Summer Roberts is all grown up.
INSTINCT: Happy 25th birthday, Rachel!
RACHEL BILSON: Thank you!
Your birthday falls on August 25th. Do you normally have to work shooting The O.C. during it?
The past two birthdays I’ve been at work. The first time I was a little depressed. My boyfriend didn’t get me flowers on set or anything, so I was really emotional and giving him a hard time and everything. I feel bad now, but at the time I was pretty bratty! [Laughs]
Is it tough also having to work with him?
I’ll just say that if I didn’t work with my boyfriend, I would never see him. But no, we’re actually pretty compatible in that way.
You’re making your movie debut this month in The Last Kiss. Give us the lowdown.
I play Kim. She’s a college student, and in a way she’s a temptress. It’s a movie about a group of friends—all these guys—going through the transition into adulthood, becoming 30 and the commitment that comes along with it. I meet Zach Braff’s character and I kind of shake up his world for a second.
You’re sort of “the other woman.” Has that ever happened in real life?
Oh, God! I hope not! Not to my knowledge at least. [Laughs]
How did you go so long without at least making some cheesy teen horror flick?
You get offered some movies, especially movies that are like your character you play on the show, because everyone knows you as that character. But you try to steer away from that. It’s hard if you play the same thing all the time. No one will know you as anything else.
Let’s get back to The O.C.. You’re returning for another season.
Yes, I survived.
Of course we were all sad to see Marissa die and would never want that to happen to you…
Thanks!
…but if it were to happen, what would be your fantasy death scene for Summer?
Oh, my God! You know what would have been cool? For Marissa and Summer to have a Thelma & Louise moment. But that’s never gonna happen, is it?
This is a TV show, Rachel! Anything is possible. So Summer and Seth are going to separate colleges this season, but they’ll still sort of be close by each other, right?
I think so. You know what? I have no idea. [Laughs] We’re not told what’s going on exactly. Until we get the first script I really don’t know what’s going to be happening.
So basically you’re saying we’re not gonna get any dirt from you. Have you ever personally been involved in a long-distance relationship?
Yeah, actually. My longtime boyfriend from high school and I dated for two years. He was a year older than me, so he went off to college while I was still in high school. A year and a half of our relationship was spent being apart. I was like, “You can do it. It can be done,” but it’s the hardest thing I’ve probably ever gone through. In a certain way, it makes it more passionate, because when you see each other it makes it that much more exciting. But the reality of it is that it’s too hard.
You dressed up as Wonder Woman once on the show. Have you thought of auditioning for the movie that Joss Whedon’s writing?
No. I don’t know if I have any superhero qualities. [Laughs]
Well, you certainly could look the part.
Thanks a lot! I don’t know if I’m quite tough enough. I like to think I am, but in that area my boyfriend always makes fun of me and says that there’s no way I could kick anyone’s ass. After seeing Kill Bill, he’s like, “Oh my God, I wanna go out with someone like that!”
You’re quite popular on the Internet. Some people on these fan sites are all like, “She’s wearing Adam’s T-shirt,” or, “I think she’s wearing his bracelet again!”
Yeah, I’ve seen some of them. [Laughs] The rings are a popular topic.
Do you ever read them and think, Say what?
Oh, yeah! Kids can be so mean—I mean, I think they’re kids. I hope it’s not 50-year old guys saying these things. But they’ll be like, “She looks so ugly. She looks so fat. What is she on? Is she pregnant? She looks like she has Down syndrome.” You get all these things that are just cruel, but I have to laugh at it because it’s funny. If you let that stuff get to you, then you’re definitely in the wrong business.
Jeez. Well, Rachel-Bilson.com is a little less harsh…at least this week: “Rachel Takes Her Two Dogs To The Vet Today.” Do you get irritated with photographers falling out of trees to get your picture?
I haven’t had a tree experience yet! [Laughs] You know, when they follow you, it’s definitely part of this whole thing. It’s gotten so crazy in the past couple years, this whole paparazzi/celebrity thing. But just like the comments, if you let that get to you, it’ll kill you.
