THE RETURN OF REICHEN!
Back By Popular Demand
A lot has happened since we put Reichen
on Instinct’s cover back in June of 2003, so
we caught up with one of our favorite cover
guys to fi nd out what he’s been up to, how he
spent his Amazing money, and why he and
Chip really broke up! Oh, and did we mention
he asked us at the cover shoot if he could be
shirtless for you, our beloved Instinct readers?
How could we say “no” to that?
NSTINCT: You’re the fi rst person we’ve ever put on our cover twice. Last time you were
on, we got so many emails. What kind of response did you get?
REICHEN: I got a big response! I think it was mostly because of that cover shot. I remember that
shoot very well. It was before The Amazing Race was on TV. We went through this very professional
shoot, and at the end of the day, I put on the fl ight suit just to play around. I was walking in front
of that silver, air-stream trailer and the editor said, “Stop!” He just picked up the camera and started
shooting. He wasn’t even the photographer.
And that ended up being the cover! A lot has happened since then. You mentioned The Amazing
Race, which you won. What’s the most extravagant thing you’ve bought with your prize money?
A Sea Ray motor yacht.
A yacht!?!
Well, it’s not like a huge yacht.
[Devilishly] How big is your yacht?
Its’ only 34 feet. I’ve been using it, but not as much as I wish. I’m too busy to get out on it.
What’s keeping you busy these days?
I’ve spent close to a year working on a reality-based TV show that we pitched to the networks called
Get Out Of My House.
You were going to be the host?
Yeah. I can’t really give away the concept yet. You know, after we pitched it to a few networks, it
appears a couple have come out with closely identical shows.
Reality can be a bitch!
It’s hard because we put so much effort into it.
Another development that happened since you were on our cover is that you broke up with your
former partner, Chip. Are you two still friends?
Yes, absolutely.
What’s Chip up to these days?
Last I heard, Chip’s doing something similar to the AIDS Ride, but out on the east coast. He sent a
mass email asking for money to sponsor him. One of the people he sent the email to was me.
Were you bothered that he sent you a mass email?
I bit my tongue and donated a nice chunk of money. Right after I sent my online donation, Chip
wrote me a personal email that said, “Wow. Thank you for your generosity. You were the fi rst person
to send in money.” We haven’t really spoken, other than email, since March.
You’re both busy.
And it’s hard to make a separation and try continuing on with your life.
There’s this sense that people really know you. If they watched The Amazing Race, they were
watching you, not some character. So it’s natural for people to be interested in what’s going on in
your life, like “Ohhh, I wonder if Reichen’s dating anyone?” So…are you dating someone now?
[Laughs] I’m dating a wonderful person
named Charlie.
How’d you meet Charlie?
It was my best friend’s birthday in March. He’s
really into cars, so we were renting Ferraris
to drive around. There’s this place in LA that
specializes in renting high-end cars. Charlie
manages the entire car group there. I went in,
and he was handling me.
You say that with a big grin.
When I met him, we both had big grins on our
faces. He’d do my paperwork at the desk and I’d
look at him. Then, when he’d look up at me, I’d
pretend to play with my Blackberry. I fi nally just
asked him out, and he said yes.
As we were doing some research, we came
across these rumors that you and James
from Boy Meets Boy dated a whiles back.
Any truth there?
We have mutual friends that wanted to hook
us up. James came out on the boat once. It
was just the two of us, and we had a really nice
afternoon. But, all in all, James and I are friends.
After the show was over and things with
Chip ended, what was dating like?
I defi nitely dated a lot. [Laughs] I was
lonely coming out of a four-and-a-half year
relationship. I wanted to spend time with
people and not be alone. I did have a couple
experiences where it was obvious they knew
who I was, and it was just too distracting for
them to connect with me.
Well, we imagine it’d be a little distracting
if they were driving through West
Hollywood and saw that huge billboard
with your face on it!
Yeah, the billboard really did a number on my
anonymity. [Laughs]
What’s the one question people ask you most?
The biggest question is usually about Chip; why
we broke up; if the Race broke us up. It’s the last
question I want to answer, but I’ll answer it now
for you. The Race did not break us up. We had
issues before the Race. The Race was actually
one of the better times of our relationship. It
was when we got back and ‘real’ reality set in
that we decided to separate.
Well, let’s focus on the present. Your photos for
this issue are hot! Did the Instinct boys treat
you well at our shoot?
Absolutely! They let me take my shirt off.
HOT!!! [Both Laugh] Speaking of hot
pictures, you have a new calendar, which
also has some very hot shots. Did you work
out even more than you normally do for a
few weeks before the shoot?
Yeah, I ate an extra oatmeal cream pie every
night before I went to bed. [Laughs]
You see, you’re not only hot, but you’ve
got personality and know how to put a
smile on our face. That’s why Instinct
likes you so much! [INSTINCT ]
