JOIN THE CLUB
Cindy Wonderful and Sarah Adorable are SCREAM CLUB, a hybrid queer rock-hip-hop-electro duo with mind-bending fashion and lyrics like “You got the kinda legs that make me wanna ZZ Top you.” Their newest album, Life Of A Heartbreaker, is out now and features a collaboration with electroqueen Peaches, among many others. We knew we had to get them for a pop quiz!
INSTINCT: 1. Who was your first musical crush?
SARAH: Phil Collins—what was that about?—followed extremely closely by George Michael…and we have the same birthday.
CINDY: Mike Patton from Faith No More and Madonna. I was young and didn’t know what it meant, but I did want her to shine her heavenly body on me.
2. Which TV show do you consider a guilty pleasure?
SARAH: I am totally addicted to The L Word, and now I’m accidentally addicted to Desperate Housewives—it’s horribly gender-rigid, but deliciously entertaining.
CINDY: The L Word, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Law & Order. But really, there is no guilt in my pleasure. Neither one of us has a TV; however, when we are at our parents’ houses, we indulge.
3. If you could collaborate or jam with anyone, who would it be?
CINDY: You know, I have already gotten to collaborate with a lot of people on my dream list, including Peaches, Busdriver, Existereo, Romanteek…but as far as more people? Hmmm. I’d love to do more with Peaches, Mike Patton, Vanilla Ice, and if I could bring him back from the dead, Biggie Smalls!
SARAH: Yeah, we’ve been really lucky. I’d love to do something with T-Pain and Diamond and Princess from Crime Mob. Oh, and Yo Majesty, for sure.
4. Name one song on the last mix CD you made someone.
SARAH: “There’s Something Going On” by Frida.
CINDY: “Let Me Smell Yo Dick” by Riskay.
5. Who would throw the best party?
a. Missy Elliott
b. Gwen Stefani
c. Madonna
d. Elton John
CINDY: I’d have to go with Missy Elliott, with Gwen as a close second.
SARAH: I totally agree. Missy’s got the convertible that turns into a bed in her bedroom.
6. The best concert I ever went to was ________.
CINDY: So many to choose from, but I have to say the only performer to consistently impress me show after show after show is Joey Casio. He’s contagious, and the music is so good it gets into you and makes you dance before you can remember to feel self-conscious.
SARAH: So many: Morrissey, The Cure, Culture Club, Rhythm King And Her Friends, Peaches, Public Enemy, Le Tigre, Tracy And The Plastics. I’ve had so many magical concert experiences, and really, we have had the chance to play with so many amazing bands, it’s like utopia, and I couldn’t begin to name them all.
7. The worst concert I ever went to was _______.
CINDY: Probably our own show at Celebrities in Vancouver, Canada, where we got booed and almost beat up by a bunch of military sport dykes who wanted to hear 50 Cent.
SARAH: The Streets. I was bored out of my mind.
8. Which Breakfast Club character are you?
CINDY: I’m kind of a cross between Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy’s characters.
SARAH: I would be Ally Sheedy’s BFF.
9. Choose one: Rosie or Ellen?
CINDY: Definitely Ellen!
SARAH: Ellen forever!
10. Where’s the craziest place you’ve performed?
CINDY: Sarah and I used to have a show in the crawl space of our basement. It was shaped like a triangle, and the tallest part was four feet high. It was called The World’s Smallest Venue. I definitely have to say that was the craziest.
11. While on tour, I can’t live without ________.
CINDY: Internet.
SARAH: iTunes.
12. Name three things that are essential to Scream Club style.
CINDY: Originality, good vibes and magic.
SARAH: Electronic electricity, positivity and crazy fun.
