GREAT DAYNE
We were stoked when TAYLOR DAYNE, legendary pop and dance diva—whose “Tell it to My Heart” and “Love Will Lead You Back” were the soundtracks to many a queer-coming-of-age—wanted in on the Pop Quiz action! Her new album Satisfied drops this month, and includes the single “Beautiful,” as well as a cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge."
INSTINCT: 1. What was the first concert you ever went to?
TAYLOR DAYNE: Boston! At the Nassau Coliseum. You’d better believe it. What person doesn’t remember their first concert? It was unbelievable. C’mon, it was Nassau Coliseum, one of the first of its kind!
2. What song are you singing in the shower these days?
Oh my God. I was singing that Rihanna and Ne-Yo duet, “Hate That I Love You.”
3. What is on your TiVo right now?
Well, it’s usually my friend Don’s TiVo. God, what a pain in the ass he is! Brothers And Sisters, Dexter, Oprah—that’s plenty. But you know, I’m [also] digging Showtime these days, I have to say.
4. Choose one: Matt Lauer or Anderson Cooper?
I would say Anderson. I like his style.
5. Which Grey’s Anatomy character do you identify with?
Well, meeting Katherine [Heigel], and at least knowing her character—and Sandra Oh—I just think they’re all great. I really do. They’re just great women; powerful, great women.
6. Ellen or Oprah?
Oooh, that’s tough. I think they’ve both just proven themselves—I wouldn’t choose. I couldn’t. Different format, different everything. Ellen, just because of all her recent trials and tribulations, and Oprah because she’s just such a force.
7. Fill in the blank: If I weren’t a recording artist, I would be a _________.
Supermodel! [Laughs] All 5’2” of me. No, I love nature. I always used to say: a forest ranger. Anything that would be really incredible and get me out in the field like that.
8. Choose one from the following:
a. Chris Daughtry
b. Carrie Underwood
c. Kelly Clarkson
d. Sanjaya
Kelly. She’s my cup of tea. My style of vocalist. I like her choices. I like her range.
9. What is the number-one most played song on your iPod?
It’s Lewis Taylor, a U.K. artist. I actually covered one of his songs. It’s called “Satisfied”—hello, the title of my record! Brilliant stuff! Brilliant.
10. If your life story would be made into a feature film, whom would you cast to play you?
Probably Renée Zellweger. She can go there.
