LGBTQ+ Adds Another Letter!

LGBTQ+ Adds Another Letter!

Is This Getting Out Of Hand?

Oy vey! Do you recall back in June of 2017 when there was a campaign to add the colors black and brown to the gay pride flag to honor an inclusive community? Inclusion it did not bring. Honestly, the only inclusion it made was my Facebook friends list as I deleted a handful of people who I would claim to swing towards racism with their ridiculous comments. I’m not even certain of the results of the campaign – and I don’t believe all merchandise and flags would change – but I do believe that the conversation of adding colors proved exactly what it’s advocators were aiming towards. The gay community is not always the most inclusive or welcoming group. Some of us are marginalized. Whether it be on race, masculinity, HIV status, and beyond.

One part of the gay community, however, is seemingly constantly changing. Hell, I’ve even lost track of the gay community’s acronym. I tend to stick to the good ole’ traditional LGBTQ – with Q being my favorite – taking me back to being called queer nearly everyday in my youth – so I’ve taken the word back and proudly wear it on every homemade Pride outfit each June! But, let’s move on…

Long are the days when LGBTQ was all we were. Now, we’ve extended to: LGBTQQIAAACPPF2…yes, t-there’s a number in it now? What on Earth. In case you were also painfully unaware of what the 2 represents, I’ve done the research for you: 2 Spirit. Which essentially means you are non-binary, non-gender, and a gender-variant. Alllrrriiightt. Okay! Jeez, see how distracting our acronym is?! I’m already getting off topic!

According to TheGayUK, we can now all add the letter “K” to the long list of who’s its and what’s it, galore! So, now – we’re at: LGBTQQIAAACPPF2K. Got it.

Obviously, you’re curious to what the K represents? Simply: KINK! So, now our sexual fetishes are a part of our acronym. I understand the LGBTQ acronym is to identify as anything but heterosexual and cisgender, so come one come all – unless you’re straight – but why is a fetish allowed? I mean, hell, the Leather Community is incredibly important to us – and defiantly sexy – but there comes a point where to we need to stop adding letters to this list! It looks like we’re going to need some smaller font for 2018’s Pride Parade posters!

Are you happy with K being added to the LGBTQ+ acronym?

2 representing non binary, non gender et al is a little bit of hijack. That 2 probably needs to be removed because 2 spirited is a term used by native Americans to describe same sex folks, mainly the powerful medicine men and women of their tribes.

Personally, I think this has risen to the level of Idiocracy. I'm embarrassed for all of us. It really seems to those on the outside, at least those whom I've asked, like we can't makeup our collective minds on our own identity. What ever happened to the all inclusive term "LGBTQ+" ?

The flag issue; when you look up at a rainbow in the sky, do you see any black, or brown. I think not. The rainbow flag has always included EVERYONE, No matter who they are. Those individual colors, Red/Orange/Yellow/Green/Blue/Purple, DO NOT SIGNIFY any specific race, Creed, color, identity or anything else. What, are we going to assign each letter of that long-azz acronym a color ... then demand they are all added to the RAINBOW flag? That's just as idiotic. Just sayin.

I'm not someone who clings on to symbolisms like the flag and I don't see myself as part of an imaginary "community". What I understand though is that LGB movements started to visibilise LGB people and visibilise the unfair mistreatment people like us were suffering. In short, movements to humanise us and recalim the human rights that under prejudice were denied to people like us.

LGB are innate traits, inborn traits that historically have been object of persecution. The other letters don't represent inborn traits and have nothing to do with sexual orientation and the historical persecution LGB have suffered.

I totally agree.... if we can’t keep track of the sub-sub-sub cultures, how can we expect our allies and those were trying to educate understand?

No more ! It’s getting ridiculous and I’m a gay man. Keep it as Gays & Lesbians or LGBT enough is enough. I personally still call it gay rights , too many letters keep it simple and focused.

Yup, just GLB is fine. I wish the rest of the letters the best, but...they're different types with different specific issues who need their own focused groups.

I completely agree, another gay man here, I personally think it's becoming out of control. So much so that I, let alone an ally am having a hard time taking it seriously anymore. Keep is simple & focused stop adding the letters & colors and fight for Gay & Lesbian rights, sexual orientation & gender identity are completely different & there are so many racial justice groups out there we need more groups that are fighting for Gay & Lesbian rights, Trans should be its own group so they can be as focused on their issues. In my opinion.
