Embattled 'Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson Says Black People Were "Happy" With Segregation

It looks like A&E and its centerpiece Duck Dynasty are not out of the woods just yet. More comments from the GQ interview with Phil Robertson, patriarch of the family showcased on the hit reality TV show, are sparking outrage. Instead of disparaging comments about the LGBT community, however, these comments center on the African American struggle for Civil Rights. According to Phil, African Americans were blissfully happy with segregation.

“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person," he told GQ. "Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

The Human Rights Campaign joined the NAACP in another letter issued to the A&E network.

It reads:

We want to be clear why Phil Robertson’s remarks are not just dangerous but also inaccurate. Mr. Robertson claims that, from what he saw, African Americans were happier under Jim Crow. What he didn’t see were lynching and beatings of black men and women for attempting to vote or simply walking down the street. And his offensive claims about gay people fly in the face of science. In fact, it’s important to note that every single leading medical organization in the country has said that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being [lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender] -- it’s not a choice, and to suggest otherwise is dangerous.

I am a unicorn. I'm not upset over Phil Robertson comments.. because they're his. Freedom of speech and debate is what makes this country great. What he said wasn't said with malice. 12 million people tune in weekly to watch the show. Which speaks volumes of their draw and the people watching it. He was asked a question and he answered it honestly, he didn't back paddle. I respect that he owns his words even if I don't totally agree with them. It is what it is. He said he worked in that field hand in hand with his  -co workers. How can we say his perception of his experience is wrong?   His words opinion doesn't change things,or affect me or you. It does show the reality we collectively know to be true- that we have a country divided.  If you believe in the bible and it offends you then you're offend by truth, if you don't then why do you care? He's not in congress he's on Duck Dynasty on A&E

I was all for the petition cause I love the show ppl twist ppls words to try and make em look bad I still love duck dynasty

This guy is the poster child for conservative republican Christians.

He did not say they were "happier". He said they were "happy". He is recalling his OWN experience. He is not stating that otrocities didn't happen. He is stating that HE personally never saw them. Sheesh.

His rights were not violated and A&E has the right to protect their brand. What does bother me about this is the hate posts directed at him. I've watched the show once or twice and have shaken my head at the things they do. I've not read every jot of his interviews but  I assume the worst of what he said was covered in the posts I've read. He talked about his beliefs and his life experiences while stating that he loves people even if he doesn't agree with them. Sounds at lot more tolerate than most.

"Where we lived was all farmers." ... Seriously?! Needless to say this guys education sucked! He is just a dumb dumb guy. People really confuse Freedom of Speech with Saying Whatever The Fuck They Want.

Phil is no dummy. He was born poor but he rose above it and attended/graduated from college. He stated what HE, HIMSELF OBSERVED, that the people he worked alongside were happy and religious. He also said nothing disparaging re:gay ppl. He said he loved everyone. READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE PEOPLE

Evidently you know nothing of the man, or the education he has had.. He doesn't put anyone down! Don't be punishing him for his views on right from wrong! Maybe you should read up on him an his life and what he has gone through before you put him down on here you dumbass!

Don't know how I landed on this site but you people are wrong...perfect example of media misrepresentation....he did not mean they looked forwards to being a slave with joy he meant that the slaves he worked with were content in their souls. He was as poor as them and he saw their appreciation of what a godly person may have.

"the slaves he worked with"

Just how old does Paula think this guy is?

Well hers what I have to say about you your are a pec of shit and I hope you die and get run over by a car I fuck hate you I hate you because your ugley and a stuck up so go fuck your self you hag

You're a fucking illiterate moron. Learn to spell before using a computer again.

Very well thought out comment. You must be a very educated and obviously articulate individual. Hope to hear more from your sect.

Seems to me like Mr. Robertson is burying his shallow grave a bit deeper...
