Alan Turing, Father Of Modern Computer Science, Pardoned For Being Gay

Dr. Alan Turing, who is considered to be the father of modern computer science, was given a posthumous royal pardon in the UK for the crime of engaging in homosexuality and "gross indecency" for which he was convicted in 1952.

His conviction resulted in him being chemically castrated as well as the loss of his security clearance. He was forced to give up his job with the Government Communications Headquarters and ultimately committed suicide via cyanide poisoning.

On Turing's royal pardon granted under the Royal Prerogative of Mercy by the Queen, justice secretary Chris Grayling states:

"Dr Alan Turing was an exceptional man with a brilliant mind. His brilliance was put into practice at Bletchley Park during the second world war, where he was pivotal to breaking the Enigma code, helping to end the war and save thousands of lives.

"His later life was overshadowed by his conviction for homosexual activity, a sentence we would now consider unjust and discriminatory and which has now been repealed.

"Dr Turing deserves to be remembered and recognized for his fantastic contribution to the war effort and his legacy to science. A pardon from the Queen is a fitting tribute to an exceptional man."

Thoughts on Turing's long overdue pardon, Instincters?

Russia is gonna be busy in the future the way they are going at it there right now. I hope they come to their senses sooner then later.

So many of the gay kids nowadays don't realize how hard it was to be gay back in the 50s and 60s. As a matter of fact, being gay wasn't legalized in California until 1974 with the advent of the consenting sex law.

The british royalty, noblety and authorities have done far grosser indecent stuff than most people. Who were they to judge people on their use of their own genitalia?

With being gay being decriminalized, ALL should be pardoned without fail AND without forms to fill out. No exceptions.
