Russian Lawmaker: Anti-Gay Laws WILL Apply During Olympics you think prospective gay Olympians and gay spectators are feeling safe right now?

Contrary to the Russian government's promise to the International Olympic Committee that the government won't be enforcing their dangerous anti-gay laws against gay athletes and spectators during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, one Russian lawmaker is saying the complete opposite.

Gay Star News reports:

Vitaly Milonov, co-sponsor of the ‘non-traditional relationships’ bill, said the government cannot decide when to selectively enforce the law.

It comes as the International Olympic Committee said the Russian government had ‘assured’ them all athletes and spectators will be safe from arrest.

Speaking to Interfax and as translated by GSN, Milonov said: ‘I have not heard any comments from the government of the Russian Federation but I know it is acting in accordance with Russian law.

‘If a law has been approved by the federal legislature and signed by the president, then the government has no right to suspend it. It doesn’t have the authority.’

In the interview, the lawmaker claimed the law is ‘defending children from the propaganda of non-traditional values’ and nothing to do with ‘the ordinary life of adults’.

Milonov said while he personally did not know any LGBT people, he said: ‘I can say that the best figure-skating in the world is the Soviet school of figure skating.

‘All of our people have been brought up in a very traditional way, I am personally acquainted with many Olympic champions. In fact, I practically grew up among many of those families.’

Milonov was the deputy responsible for the law prohibiting ‘gay propaganda’ in St Petersburg, beginning the trend that led to the nationwide ban.

So which is it, Russia? Will you be enforcing these laws or not? And are we simply supposed to trust that our gay athletes and spectators will be safe from harm based on your "promises" when you have high powered lawmakers publicly contradicting your statements?

What's your take, Instincters?

**And let's take a moment to note that Milonov claims he doesn't know any gay people while breathlessly praising the "Soviet school of figure skating." Girl, please.

We should go. All gay athletes should be out and proud. Remember Jesse Owens during Hitler's Olympics, how he shinned and  showed up Germanys superior race? Foreign Gay spectators should go and dare Russia to treat us like animals. Lets show the world how bad Putin is then watch how easily we can then start to boycott all things Russian.

Signing this petition against Milonov and Mizulina is more effective than dumping your vodka. So say all Russian LGBT activists. Sign now!

As heartbreaking as it would be for gay athletes, I think they should back out.  It doesn't feel right to compete in Russia knowing the only reason you are not being arrested and/or beaten is because you are an athlete, protected because the Russian government doesn't want to look bad on TV arresting Olympians.  Meanwhile, any other gay person on Russian soil has to fear for their life and safety.  The international community should be ashamed for turning such a blind eye to these abuses for the sake of the Olympics.
