U. of Chicago Frat Plays Racist Homophobic Prank On Postal Service Worker

An African-American mail carrier was on the receiving end of prank by a University of Chicago fraternity and now the frat is being accused of racism and homophobia.

CBS Chicago reports:

Postal carrier Iran Becton said about a week after Memorial Day he had an order to deliver dozens of postal supply boxes to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at 56th Street and University on campus.

The Sun-Times Mary Mitchell reports, it took Becton six or seven trips to deliver the packages until one of the fraternity members told Becton to read the name on the order “Reggin Toggaf” backwards.

Reversing the names, the first name is a racial slur. The last name is a slur for gay men.

Becton explains, “About a week after Memorial Day, I had an order to bring 79 of the boxes. I came to the address and explained to the frat member that I would have a lot more supplies. I went back to the truck for the boxes about six or seven times. After the last trip, one of the frat guys came out and said it was a practical joke. Another guy said that I should read the name backwards and I’ll get the joke.”

Postal delivery has been suspended until they issue Becton a written apology and the University is apparently complying with an investigation from the U.S. Postal Service. Criminal charges could be filed based on the abuse of postal property.

How do you think this should be handled, Instincters?

Phi Delta Theta was not responsible, was terribly upset by the incident, and reported it when it occurred. Only 33 of their 57 members are white, and articles like this put them in danger of retaliation against them for hate crimes committed against them in the first place. Whoever did this should be held accountable as it is utterly cruel, but right now I am concerned for the safety of these young people. Please get all the details before making your own stereotypes on things like this. The original articles published by Chicago Sun Times and Huffington Post have been amended. Check them out for more information.

It's cruel what Iran went through.  They need to be punished.

Those dumb kids need to grow up. But so does everyone who's upset about this. :/

They should be suspended - who thought using the N word is funny?  Really, who?.

Use them as an example- throw the book at them. This has to stop. They aren't children- they shouldn't be allowed to act that way.
