An African-American mail carrier was on the receiving end of prank by a University of Chicago fraternity and now the frat is being accused of racism and homophobia.
CBS Chicago reports:
Postal carrier Iran Becton said about a week after Memorial Day he had an order to deliver dozens of postal supply boxes to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at 56th Street and University on campus.
The Sun-Times Mary Mitchell reports, it took Becton six or seven trips to deliver the packages until one of the fraternity members told Becton to read the name on the order “Reggin Toggaf” backwards.
Reversing the names, the first name is a racial slur. The last name is a slur for gay men.
Becton explains, “About a week after Memorial Day, I had an order to bring 79 of the boxes. I came to the address and explained to the frat member that I would have a lot more supplies. I went back to the truck for the boxes about six or seven times. After the last trip, one of the frat guys came out and said it was a practical joke. Another guy said that I should read the name backwards and I’ll get the joke.”
Postal delivery has been suspended until they issue Becton a written apology and the University is apparently complying with an investigation from the U.S. Postal Service. Criminal charges could be filed based on the abuse of postal property.
How do you think this should be handled, Instincters?
