WWE Star Darren Young Comes Out As Gay

Updated noon est

The WWE has issued a statement following pro-wrestler Darren Young's coming out.

"WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar," a rep for the organization said. "Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation."

The WWE family has been buzzing all morning after one of their own, pro-wrestler Darren Young, came out as gay to TMZ cameras.

The huge and historic moment happened when TMZ photographers asked Darren if he thought a gay wrestler could succeed in the WWE.

"Absolutely. Look at me. I'm a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy."

"I'm hoping to be able to make a difference," Young added. "It's very important to me that people understand that somebody's sexual preference shouldn't really matter. It should be about the person."
The WWE family has been incredibly supportive so far. "Congratulations to @DarrenYoungWWE for being the first openly gay WWE Superstar!" tweeted WWE Executive Vice President Stephanie McMahon.
"Congratulations, @DarrenYoungWWE for living YOUR life, YOUR way. ," Chief Operating Officer Triple H wrote.
Fellow wrestler John Cena had this to say:

Congratulations, Darren!
