Wentworth Miller Rejects Russian Film Festival Invite: 'As A Gay Man, I Must Decline'

Wentworth Miller sent a very clear statement today in his letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, declining their invitation to attend as the "Guest of Honor."

See what he had to say:

"Re: St. Petersburg International Film Festival / "Guest of Honor" Invitation

Dear Ms. Averbakh:

Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes.

However, as a gay man, I must decline.

I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice.

Until then.

Miller immediately received support from GLAAD, who says via spokesperson Wilson Cruz: "Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone. As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia's horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia's anti-LGBT law."

Well done, Wentworth!!

We're curious how Russia planned to welcome their gay "Guest of Honor"?? Was it going to be in handcuffs?

Good on him. Sadly, in a sense it plays into the Russian government's hands, because they don't want gay people going there anyway, and it saves them the trouble of arresting him and deporting him once he gets there.  More an issue for Russia is how they plan to eliminate all the 7 million gays already living there.  A diaspora is not affordable by them all, which only leaves reopening the gulags.

Okay this is the third "outing" in as many days.  Monday, it was Adam Brown from "The Hobbit."  Yesterday, it was Lucas Cruikshank from YouTube & Nickelodean.  Now, Wentworth Miller.  This is great!  This gives gay youth hope for the future that being out and being famous are not mutually exclusive.

So, I wonder if tomorrow it will be that "famous actor" who posted on Reddit as "mylifeisalie123" about being in the closet in Hollywood.

Regardless, congrats to Mr. Miller for living his life openly and honestly and for having the courage to take a stand against Russia's barbaric and insane homophobic laws.

Correction:   Wentworth "came out" about FIVE YEARS AGO.- He does not do much Public Speaking, hence the reason You might think that he "Just now" outed himself.-

But, he HAS, been "Out" for a while:

Wentworth and his partner are supposedly close Friends with Tom Bomer (from "White Collar") and HIS Partner.-

Oh, BTW:

You DO know that Tom Bomer (star of the TV series, "White Collar") is OPENLY GAY as well?!

He "Came out" a year-and-a-half ago (Valentine's Day, 2012):

I thought it was Matt Bomer from "White Collar."  Who's Tom Bomer?

Actually, Wentworth did not come out 5 years ago. That was all rumor and speculation. He normally refused to confirm or deny the fact. I do remember that his "Prison Break" co-star, Dominic Purcell stated that he was certain Wentworth Miller was not gay because he wanted a family and kids. Well, we see how accurately that statement turned out to be.  Plus, there is a YouTube video of (drunk) woman defending Wentworth's heterosexuality by saying that the slept together.

Regardless, Mr. Miller may have been out to family and friends but he's was not out to his fans and general public until yesterday. Now, it's official and I still say, "Good for him!"

You're right! - It is "Matt"; Not "Tom".- Sorry.-

I am ONLY going by what the two actors have said about themselves...nothing else.-

I am NOT repeating gossip...I am going by what the two actors have said about themselves.(check out the web links I provided)-

Besides...Did You know that there are STILL people who do NOT believe Elton John nor Neil Patrick Harris nor Anderson Cooper nor Ricky Martin nor George Takei nor Nate Berkus nor Jim Nabors nor Clive Barker nor Alan Cumming nor Tabb Hunter nor Lance Bass nor Steve Grand are gay?!

I am NOT spreading gossip...I am going by what EACH person (respectively) has said ABOUT THEMSELVES.-

Some people STILL do Not believe that Rock Hudson, Raymond Burr, Freddie Mercury and Liberace were gay.-

It really does not matter when, where or how these people "came out".-

People are going to believe what they want to believe...whether it's the Documented proof (such as the actor actually saying it) or not.-

As for Dominic Purcell stating that he was "certain Wentworth Miller was not gay because he wanted a family and kids"...

What's wrong with a GAY man wanting a "Family and kids"?!

I, personally, know MANY GAY Men who have a "Family and kids".-

"Having a Family and kids" is NOT limited to the heterosexual Community.-

GEEZ, people!!

If You were to keep Up-To-Date on Current Events, perhaps You wouldn't be so surprised when something like this (Wentworth Miller declining Russian invitation) happens.-

IF ANYONE has ANY doubts about the sexuality of the guys I've listed above, just check it out.-

Do Not take My word for it.-

If You do not believe what I say, just look it up.-

Mr. Wall, I am confused as to whom you are speaking.  I do not disagree with much of what you are posting, but what does that have to do with anything about Wentworth Miller coming out yesterday?  I don't remember anyone accusing you of spreading gossip or innuendo.  If you thought that, I apologize, but I was referring to other media outlets and sources, not you.

Even though you are right that there are many people out there who do not know/believe that a number of celebrities are out and proud gay men and women (John Barrowman being another one for your list), what does that have to do with Miller's coming out?  Or anything I posted?  I don't understand your animosity.  I too kept up on Wentworth because I liked "Prison Break" (only the first season though) and thought he was hot.  I heard the rumors about him and Luke Macfarlane and later on, Kristoffer Cusick, but nothing was confirmed officially.  And once again, nothing publicly was stated about Mr. Miller being gay even if he was out to friends, family, co-workers, the gay island that is Los Angeles, and the two actors you spoke with.

I will have to say though, that I did not think Wentworth Miller would ever come out.  He struck as being a very private person whatever the reason.  The fact that he confirmed being gay IS a surprise, a pleasant one, but a surprise nonetheless.

Wentworth never publicly said he was gay until this letter.

What ever.-

What's done is done.-

I loved watching him on that show,so pround of him for telling the world who is and showing his support.

i had no idea he was gay.....glad he took this stance. I just wish it did not take extreme situations in order for people to come out. Perhaps he was out and we just did not know it. Either way, I am proud of him.

Yeahhhh !!!

Good for Wentworth, I heard he was gay when "Prison Break" was still on the air. Guess standing up in support of the Russian LGBT community provided him the opportunity to come out.

He is so dreamy. : )

Well done Wentworth on standing up for our LGBT community in Russia,

We all strive for a better and safer world where we all live in peace and harmony as one.
