Openly Gay Sergeant & DADT Activist Darren Manzella Has Died
Updated 12:00 p.m. pst
The cause of Darren Manzella's death has been revealed as a series of car accidents that took place on Thursday night.
Cpl. John Helfer of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, said the incident began as a two-car crash on the westbound lanes of the highway in Pittsford, when one car sideswiped another car about 8:30 p.m. Helfer did not identify the man killed.
The man stopped his car in the middle lane of I-490, got out and started pushing it from behind, Helfer said. A sport utility vehicle rear-ended the car, pinning the man between the two vehicles.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, Helfer said. The other two involved drivers were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The paper also reports that Darren's father learned about his son's death from online news stories, and has yet to hear from police.
Darren Manzella, the outspoken openly-gay U.S. Army Sergeant whom we've written about extensively here at InstinctMagazine.com, passed away late Thursday. The details on the untimely loss of one of the hardest working activists who helped usher in a new post-"Don't Ask Don't Tell" era are still scant, but the reaction pouring in from both the LGBT and the military communities are heart wrenching.
