Rapper Accuses Britney's "Work Bitch" Of Exploiting Gay Community

"This is not 'gay pride,' it's 'gay marketing'," says nascent gender-bending queer rapper Mykki Blanco about Britney Spears' latest, "Work Bitch." Accusing Brit Brit of exploiting gay culture to keep her career churning, Mykki puts her marketing and lyrics on blast in a Twitter tirade that has fans on both sides of the discussion talking.

"Is it just me or is every female pop star currently in a war to secure as many gay fans and gay $ as possible?" Mykki writes in the tweets that have since been deleted.

Her other tweets read [sic]:

"This shit is tacky. Work bitch? lol"

"This is not 'gay pride' it's 'gay marketing' designed to keep u fags on ecstasy blasting garbage music til 6 am"

"Forgive me father for I cannot handle the corny"

Female pop stars being accused of exploiting the gay community stretch all the way back to Madonna's co-opting of the Vogue movement in the early '90s and continue through contemporary accusations against Lady Gaga. Britney herself is no stranger to the controversy. Her last album, Femme Fatale, was slammed as nothing but a gay marketing attempt to remain relevant.

In late August, openly gay rapper Le1f blasted Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for supporting LGBT rights even though they're straight and accused the duo of plagiarizing one of his songs.

What do you think of Mykki's claims, Instincters? Is "Work Bitch" designed to exploit the gay community?

Mykki Blanco can eat shit and live.  Who is this bytch anyway?

Here's a quarter, call someone who cares.

HERE HERE!!!

OK Sorry but this is just crazy. Britney as well as Madonna, Lady GaGa, Cher, etc. have always been gay icons. We as gays as well as teens have always bought there music so why is someone making this such a new big deal?

i thouhgt that Le1f and Mykki Blanco were the same rapper expressing their displease with mainstream music yet again, i think track is cool obviously gay oriented... but just like someone pointed out - you choose your own taste in music, if it's not your stuff - no one will sell it to you.

So here's the thing, a minority group can't desire full acceptance into the majority but on the other hand be mad about when a mainstream person sends them a cultural nod their way. Sure, do people try too hard to show their support and acceptance? Yes. Might this be one of those cases? Yes. Is it exploitation? Absolutely not.

As gays, many of us constantly cloak our speech and gestures in the safety of heteronormative conventions. But now someone (Britney Spears in this case) is making what's normal for many of us gays, a normalcy for the mainstream. And she's being accused of exploiting us? That's unfair and wrong. It would be exploitation if she hated us or if she never acknowledged the kind of presence the gay community has had in her career. But this is not the case. She is on record, numerous times, showing her acceptance and appreciation for us. We can't scorn all the a-holes who passively (or aggressively) promote homophobia in their music but then cry exploitation when someone wants to be in our club.

But think about this, the phrase "work" as it is so oft used today was something I grew up hearing my (Black) female family members say decades ago.  It didn't just materialize into the gay lexicon because Ru Paul said so. Does that mean all the gays who adopted this phrase into their lives are exploiting Black women? By Mykki's logic, yes. But by mine, I just think imitation is the highest form of flattery, even if the imitation is a little bit much.

Way to try and drum up your own publicity of her coattails...

While I'm not a big fan, Britney is an artist/performer and she's allowed to express herself however she likes.  Anyone is free to listen/buy if they want.  Bashing her for it is just ridiculous and pointless. It is also an extremely condescending implication that everyone else is just a tasteless robot being manipulated by clever marketers.  They dream they could find someone to market them as well.  Seems to me that these vocal haters are always some wanna-be you've never heard of, just trying to get some attention.  We will see if anyone knows who the hell Le1f or Mykki Blanco is in ten years.
