U.S. Labor Department Announces All Same-Sex Marriages Will Be Recognized Under Private Pension Plan Law
Following the lead set by the U.S. Treasury Department, the U.S. Labor Department announced today that the federal government will recognize the legal marriages of same-sex couples with regards to private employee pension and related benefit plans.
This recognition will take place no matter where the couple currently resides, as long as they are legally married.
According to BuzzFeed's Chris Geidner, this utilizes the "place of celebration" rule rather than the "place of domicile" rule.
