PA Rep. Brian Sims Asks For Censure Following House Colleague's Offensive Accusations
Pennsylvania State Rep. Brian Sims officially requested a censure of his House colleague, Rep. Daryl Metcalfe following comments Metcalfe made to the press, which Sims believes denounced his character and reputation.
Yesterday, Sims, who is openly gay, was planning to address the Pennsylvania House regarding the Supreme Court's DOMA ruling, when Metcalfe used a procedural move to silence him.
Not content with simply shutting Sims up, Metcalfe then went to the media, telling WHYY:
“I did not believe that as a member of that body that I should allow someone to make comments such as he was preparing to make that ultimately were just open rebellion against what the word of God has said, what God has said, and just open rebellion against God’s law.”
Apparently Metcalfe has ESP since he's so certain that he knew what Sims was about to say...
For his part, Sims addressed the House today requesting that Metcalfe be reprimanded. Watch what he had to say:
Sims says: “It is my understanding of the rules of this body that I could never call another member a bigot a homophobe or a racist, nor would I, but I do ask that this body recognize that the language used against me as a member does not live up to the standards set by this body.”
According to The New Civil Rights Movement:
The House determined that it could not censure Metcalfe for comments made elsewhere, but House Speaker Sam Smith told Sims he could lodge a complaint with the Ethics Committee, or seek a House resolution condemning Metcalfe. Rep. Sims indicated he did not intend to pursue the matter further.
Open rebellion against God's law, huh? It appears that Metcalfe is once again forgetting that whole separation between church and state thing...
How do you feel about the way Rep. Sims handled it, Instincters?
