Sinead's Letter Starts Ugly Feud With Miley: "You're Fucking Stupid"

On Wednesday, we shared a heartfelt, motherly letter Sinead O'Connor penned to Miley Cyrus. It was filled with sage words that mostly advised the young star to avoid being "pimped out" by the music industry.

Miley didn't take it so well.

As soon as the letter went viral, Miley RTd some of Sinead's more personal tweets from years ago, along with the caption: "Before Amanda Bynes ... There Was ..."

Miley's retweets were of these comments from Sinead:

Sinead quickly took off the earrings, wrote Miley out of the will and ripped her like she was a picture of Pope John Paul II in a new letter posted to Facebook:

"Miley… Really? Who the f--k is advising you? Because taking me on is even more f--kin' stupid than behaving like a prostitute and calling it feminism. You have posted today tweets of mine which are two years old, which were posted by me when I was unwell and seeking help so as to make them look like they are recent. In doing so you mock myself and Amanda Bynes for having suffered with mental health issues and for having sought help."

"I mean really really… who advises you? [H]ave you any idea how stupid and dangerous it is to mock people for suffering illness? You will yourself one day suffer such illness, that is without doubt. The course you have set yourself upon can only end in that, trust me. I am staggered that any 20 yr old woman of the 21st century could behave in such a dangerous and irresponsible manner as to not only send the signal to young women that its ok to act like prostitutes but also to the signal that those who have suffered or do suffer mental health problems are to be mocked and have their opinions invalidated. Have you no sense of danger at all? or responsibility? Remove your tweets immediately or you will hear from my lawyers. I am certain you will be hearing from all manner of mental health advocacy groups also. It is not acceptable to mock any person for having suffered."

"It is most unbecoming of you to respond in such a fashion to someone who expressed care for you. And worse that you are such an anti-female tool of the anti-female music industry. I hope that you will apologise to Amanda Bynes and to any person who has been wounded by your mockery of those who have suffered. And I hope that you will wake up and understand that you in fact are a danger to women."

"Furthermore you posted a photo of me tearing the pope's photo .. as if to imply insanity.. by doing so all you have achieved is to expose your staggering ignorance. I suggest you read The Philadelphia Report, The Boston Report, all the reports which will illuminate for you why that action of mine remains sane and valid. By mocking it you mock every child who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of priests and had it covered by the Vatican. You could really do with educating yourself, that is if you're not too busy getting your tits out to read."

And just when you thought it was safe to comment, Miley responded with these Tweets...

Who won this round, Instincters?

Very beautiful, I like it very much.

It's shameful that this fiasco should bury what was a beautiful letter written by Sinead O'Connor.  If any of you haven't read it yet, go to the link in the text above and do so.

Personally, I am exhausted of anyone referring to any criticism of Cyrus as "slut shaming" and pretending that any negative commentary is negative against women in general.

The concept of slut shaming refers to the practice of using a woman's personal sex life as a weapon.  It does not refer to a sexualized stage performance, and Miley's inability to keep her tongue in her mouth. It is not "slut shaming" to criticize her rudeness, or to suggest she is getting some really bad advice.

So those commenters spewing this, save the "slut shaming" criticism for real women, not for "singers" who dress In rubber, masturbate with foam fingers on stage, and stick their tongues out at everything. Using that concept to defend a stage performance dilutes its impact in real situations.

My annoyance at this point has to be directed at Miley.

Both of her responses to Sinead were juvenile. I mean, come on. To first compare her to Amanda Bynes (which is outrageous, considering this woman is an intelligent and talented mature lady) and then to use the 'fame' card by expressing how busy she is is just sickening!

My annoyance also is directed at the people who are commenting saying Sinead is just trying to garner fame and attention... We don't know that? Is it so hard to believe that a famous person MIGHT just be genuinely concerned for young woman whom she believes is lost in the music industry and propagating the most positive message for young teenage girls? Christ! Have some manners. And if anyone is going to be that kind of genuine person, it's Sinead.

Lastly, I have to say that I have to agree completely with Sinead's latest open letter to Miley. Someone needs to be telling her this stuff! I'm sorry, whether she thinks it or not, she is an anti-female tool used by the chauvinistic  music industry as was Britney in her day. Women like them are used for their bodies to make tons of money for the industry. Sinead is one clever cookie.

They both lost this battle.

Sinead is not helping feminism by slut-shaming Miley -- and, no, that is exactly what she's doing. Because objectification isn't done by the naked girl. It's done by the people *looking* at the naked girl. Furthermore, repeatedly referring to that behavior as "prostitution" while simultaneously regarding it in such a negative way does *nothing* to improve the situation of actual prostitutes. So, Sinead, in her attempts to reach out to another human being, has pretty much thrown two entire sectors of human beings under the bus. Well done.

But, on the other hand, Miley could easily have just said what I said. But she didn't. She decided to, a) respond as though all criticism is insulting (even though this criticism was kind of insulting, it was obviously intended to be constructive and should have been regarded that way) and b) throw *another* sector of humanity under the bus by mocking people dealing with mental illness.

With their total willingness to disregard everyone outside their own discussion...are we sure they're not actually members of Congress?

thats silly, must say it was just kind experienced advice pointing out the difference between exploiting your own sexuality and been exploited it was not "slut shaming" which is a moronic concept anyway.

Sinead is desperate for another fifteen minutes of fame.

From her recent marriage to other mistakes, she should mind her own business!  She has a lot to keep herself busy!

I have been defending Miley...up until today.

Some might now call her a "cunt." I won't, because that would be rude. Someone, however, might actually call Miley a "vacuuous cunt..."

Go eat a Dick. Sinead always was one hell of a woman. I myself went through mental illness for 10yrs and what Myley did was insensitve and stupidly insensitive. I place women on pedastals because they are tougher than nails but in miss thangs case she lowered herself to a trolls standard.

Miley Cyrus is a disgusting "pimped out" child. I have NEVER and I mean NEVER liked a damn thing she's done.  I hope Disney realizes their precious back catalog of HANNA MONTANA is now soggy pickles for adult whores! She'll eventually catch a bacterial infection via that tongue which hangs lower than Gene Simmons' and the music world will be all the better for it!

@MA Melby - here's the thing, you don't get to decide who is in o out of the conversation.

I have to say, though, that if Sinead is going to fault Miley for how she's referring to mental illness, then she should also consider how her language is stigmatizing sex workers the way she keeps saying "acting like a prostitute" ... "behaving like a prostitute." I love Sinead and am no fan of Miley's racially insensitive and problematic new image (though I loved "Hannah Montana"...), but I don't think it's responsible to discuss or refer to sex work that way.

Craig, here's the thing. People can't choose whether or not they have a mental illness. However, most people CAN choose to work in the sex industry. I am not about labels, and I'm not judging people who work in the sex industry, but Miley is acting promiscuous to get attention and to sell her album. That's the issue Sinead was calling Miley out on, and rightfully so. Sinead initially did it in a nice way, and she was constructively criticizing Miley but was not putting her down. Miley acted like a 2-year old and threw a mental health issue Sinead had back in her face. That was uncalled for.

I think you should rephrase your thoughts about MOST people working the sex industry as having a choice in the matter... Just saying.  As someone who unfortunately had to be a part of that industry at a very low time in my life.  Its not like you wake up one day and think, I want to be a whore professionally... Well some might but most people do it because they have either run out of options or because they are being forced into it by outside forces!

I'm not trying to be insensitive, but YES, many people do choose that lifestyle. Now, if you have a gun held to your head, then, NO, you DIDN'T choose it. Otherwise, it was a choice. There ARE other jobs out there besides working the sex industry. And, it's a shame that you didn't post your name.

Your comments only confirm what Sinead was saying.  She told Miley she was "behaving like a prostitute and calling it feminism."  Then you go on to say that you worked in that industry without a choice.  It is an industry that does not foster freedom and empowerment, so by your very words, it is antithetical the the feminism movement.

Full agree with your assessment. Thanks.

As someone who has suffered from the effects of bipolar disorder, I understand where Sinead is coming from. Miley, while trying to make Sinead look stupid by re-posting tweets from Sinead when she was mentally ill, has instead made herself to look like an ass. Miley needs to grow up and get a real job. She's NOT talented enough to be in show business, anyway. Someone who does nasty and provocative things to promote herself, like Miley, is clearly trying to deflect attention from her lack of talent. Miley will probably be the next celebrity (if you want to call her that) to enter rehab.

Especially considering that Miley's current manager is the same guy who was managing Brittany Spears when she had her's a recipe for disaster.

I'm sorry to hear Sinead has suffered mental illness in the past. Any serious illness is hard to over come but mental illness can be devastating and Sinead is right, it was not decent to use that part of her life as a tool for vengeance. I am glad it seems Sinead knows that and can rise above it.

Almost all teen stars have suffered a form of mental or emotional distress, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan being extreme examples, so I think Sinead has a point to her saying.

Miley is just a new generation of teen stars and I think people should not be so harshly critical while she explores that. She is being a hoe but we don't need to judge her so harshly that it humiliates her and shuts her down. Without exploration there is no creativity. Maybe after this phase she will find herself realize what a slut she was and become a great artist.

Didn't comment before out of respect for O'Connor - Cyrus' talent is questionable at best, negligible at worst.  I had, & still have enormous respect for O'Connor & all that she has done & hopefully will continue to do; since I didn't need any more reason to turn off the music or TV before whenever Cyrus came on that has not changed, that's only been reinforced.

Myley is a stupid, braindead twat and a physical bitch slapping from Sinead I'd love to see. Grow up you little Ho and get a life.

There is a gray line sometimes; between fighting objectification and slut shaming.  O'Conner is near the edge of it; but you just took a dive into the deep end of misogynistic aggression.

Don't pretend you're on the side of women.  You're just a fucking asshole bigot - you can get the hell out of our conversations now.
