Broadway's NICK ADAMS takes (it all) off to become musical theater's next big thing
Photography by Bruno Rand Nick Adams owes his ascension to Broadway stardom to Mario Lopez and he knows it. A talented 25-year-old, and a stage veteran of Chicago and The Pirate Queen, Adams had been appearing in the revival of A Chorus Line since it opened in 2007. Each night he caused a collective sigh in the audience when the curtain rose to reveal him clad in a snug tank top and form-fitting tights as Larry, the dance captain. Yet when Lopez, having made a splash in ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, joined the musical well into its run, Adams’ revealing costume was modified and his position on stage was changed, and the theatrical rumor mill sniffed a tomcat fight. Tabloids and the blogosphere had a field day suggesting Lopez had demanded the changes due to bicep envy over his equally sculpted costar and Nick Adams was suddenly a recognizable name.

The affable Adams chuckles as he remembers the show’s management asking him to wear a sweatshirt to Mario’s first rehearsal so Lopez wouldn’t be intimidated by his decade-younger costar. “I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? He’s Mario Lopez. Why would he give a shit about some unknown Broadway actor?’” Adams, however, debunks any notion of a feud. “[Mario] was actually incredible,” he reveals. “We became friends and workout buddies. I was in L.A. in September and I hung out with him and his family.” Adams attributes the rumors to the changes made to the long-running production, which are de rigueur when an established star joins an existing show. “I don’t know if it was Mario who was behind the demands. All I know is they wanted to hide my body and they didn’t want us to dance next to each other. I get it. He’s the star of the show and people were coming to see him.”

Audiences might have gone to see Lopez in the iconic musical, generally regarded as one of the theater’s great ensemble pieces but it was usually Adams’ bulging biceps and toned torso that had tongues wagging as they filed out of the theater and set message boards ablaze with gossip about the fabricated feud. “It was really the best thing that could happen to me and the show,” Adams now admits. “People were coming to see A Chorus Line to decide for themselves who had the best body,” he recalls, laughing. “I can’t be mad about it.” Why would he be when attention to Adam’s fine form led to a modeling contract as the face and physique of the 2008 2(x)ist underwear campaign? Coincidentally, Lopez was rumored to have been in the running for this highly visible modeling gig but Adams downplays this, as well. “The first time I heard about it was when I read it like everyone else. I had no idea they were considering him,” he admits. “If it’s true, my guess is I was cheaper,” Adams speculates with a chuckle. I can't wait to read the rest of the Nick Adams story!! What a babe, and the writer really knows how to dish with style. It's nice to know Nick and Mario didn't get into a "tomcat fight", though I'd love to see the fur fly there . . .
