For 10 years, photographer MICHAEL ANTHONY DOWNS has been using what he learned at the Department of Defense to deliver some of the hottest guys on the Web. To celebrate a decade of AllAmericanGuys.com, he sits down with Instinct to talk about where he’s been, where he’s going and some of the things he’s seen along the way.
There is something to be said for getting in on the ground floor. To be the first among your peers and competitors often sets you apart and helps lay the foundation for success. That is especially true for the Internet, where successful websites—the true masters—live in a world between old-school longevity and the world’s cutting-edge technology.
Ten years ago, Michael Anthony Downs left his job at the Department of Defense to take a stab at turning his hobby into a career. Urged on by his friend Chris Wescott, Michael took his online portfolio of male fitness models and transformed it into a website for eager subscribers. It was the humble beginning of the now hugely popular AllAmericanGuys.com.

“It all came about by mistake,” says Michael. Looking back, his career began in a much different direction. “I got started in politics right after college. If you had asked me 10 years ago while I was doing that if I would be shooting fitness models for a living, I probably would have looked at you funny.” He adds, “Life took an interesting turn there.”
