ImageDear Instinct,

I would like to nominate my mother. She is so fantastic. She supports me in every way she can even though she is very sick. She has cancer in both lungs and also is a diabetic. She has a very good attitude toward life. Her only goal is for me to meet a nice man before she dies. Just to show you how supportive she is, just before she got sick she went to every gay bar in Pittsburgh with some of my friends. Of course I wasn’t allowed to go because she stated she wanted to have more fun…haha. So I hope you will consider my mother. She is really a great person. You would like her. Thank you.

Robert Icenhour
Beaver Falls, PA

Known to many as “Mamma Huggy,” Betty Icenhour has a reputation with those who know her as a gay activist, an AIDS fundraiser and, above all, a loving mother. Robert came out to his mother when he opened a gay bar in his hometown. While he never actually said the words, his mother’s visit to his establishment confirmed what “a mother always knows,” says Betty. “We became even closer than we ever were before,” Robert says of his relationship with his mother after he came out. “She is my best friend.” Today, the roles have reversed, and Robert is providing his mother with the same care and attention that he was raised with. In spite of complicating health matters, Betty continues her support of her son and the gay community. “The government needs to wake up and give the gay community the same rights that everyone else has,” she says. “No one has the right to tell someone who they can and can’t love.”
