'American Bandstand' Dancers Reveal Dick Clark's Gay Witch Hunt

A sequel to Hairspray could be created based on new allegations lobbed by former dancers of Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Frank Brancaccio (pictured above) and Eddie Kelly have gone on record to detail the lengths the late Dick Clark would go to to keep openly gay dancers off the popular show.

An interview with the National Enquirer reveals:

Clark had his aides comb Philadelphia’s gay hangouts – and if any of the show’s teens were discovered as being openly gay, the horrified host would banish them!

Handsome gay 14- to 17-year old males who helped popularize dance crazes like the Slop, the Continental, the Fly and the Hitchhike could stay on “Bandstand” as long as they looked straight. But any open hint of homosexuality got them kicked out the door – and the teens knew it in no uncertain terms.

[“Bandstand” regular, Eddie] Kelly revealed, “Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse square was known as a meeting place for homosexuals. If you were seen in the square, you couldn’t go on ‘Bandstand.’ So most of us really stayed away.”

But his same-sex secret actually made Brancaccio start going to the show when he was 14 years old!

“I went to ‘Bandstand’ because I was gay and I was a misfit in my neighborhood. I lived in very tough South Philadelphia,” he says. “I’d see these kids dancing and instinctively I knew I could fit in with them. I went to coffee shops, but I also hung out in Rittenhouse Square and so did many of the dancers. It was no secret. When I used to walk down the streets of Philadelphia and be recognized, I’d be called a ‘Bandstand f*****.’”

Brancaccio and Kelly went on to shock everyone by revealing that a "high percentage" of Bandstand dancers were gay.

"It’s true," Kelly added. "Now it’s out and it’s good. When I went to ‘Bandstand’ in 1959, I found most of the males were gay, but that could never have gotten out to the public.”

The reason he went to great lengths to weed out openly gay dancers was because Dick Clark was gay (trust me) and he didn't want the heterosexual illusion to somehow weaken. It is unfortunate that gays have done a lot against their own kind, but let's leave Aaron Schock out of this.

how time have changed

Dick was a closet  case

In the late Seventies I I was a Production Supervisor for a Major Latin Promoter in Los Angeles as well as a Production assistant for Don Kirshner Rock Concert Television Show which filmed at Culver City Studios.(Now Sony Studios). I had industry connections then and can attest from personal knowledge that many of the male dancers on AB were indeed Gay! I also frequented the legendary Gay 18+  Disco; ODYSSEY 1, at Beverly & La Cienega. With my connections and influence I was able to call favors in for 3 regulars at Odyssey, (all gay and very good dancers with female dance partners), subsequently landing them dance spots on the AB TV show. Even being the late 70's they were advised not to admit they were Gay when they were on the set.

Dick Clark was an asshole and this was widely known before this "came out".

Two words:National.....Enquirer...not exactly the place i wanna get my facts about celebrities.

I could see the comment about Rittenhouse Square being true, though...

Now I understand where so many of my crushes originated. Subliminal gaydar on American Bandstand!

I can see John Waters already writing the script for Hairspray 2 :) .....
