'American Idol' Gets Its First On-Air Openly Gay Contestant

American Idol, why do you play with our emotions this way?!

Last night, the show welcomed its first openly gay contestant to the Top 30 (Top 15 girls), 20-year-old San Francisco lesbian, Emkay Nobilette and it was emotional for all involved. (Though we're thinking it was probably more emotional for us, because, TEARS.)

“I’m very obviously gay,” Emkay tells Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. “And there are always gonna be people in America and everywhere else who will definitely hate me. But I think that in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have made it a positive thing.”

We've already got a crush!

Clearly Emkay isn't the first gay contestant to cross the Idol stage, but she is the first to discuss her sexual orientation on-air during the show. It's good to see 13 seasons in.

Congratulations, Emkay!

I love her voice and her passion, I pray that she wins or at the very least gets into the top 10 for the season.

why is this news? The only place I've ever seen more gays on television is on Queer as Folk. I mean come on!! Adam Lambert wasn't "in the closet" and Clay Aiken either, they just didn't discuss it with the media like it was a big news story. Then there was that one, David Archuletta (?) but sexuality shouldn't ever be an issue, negative or otherwise, when it comes to these talented kids.

The only way to stop prejudice is through visibility. If you can't get that, I'm sorry for you.

Now she is a reason to watch again. Gotta support our girl.

Second one this season. I forgot their name but someone used the song if I were a boy as a way to come out.

Luck to you
