British Singer Sam Smith Comes Out As Gay

British singer Sam Smith raised eyebrows and questions when his latest video for the song "Leave Your Lover" debuted and featured a male love interest. Was Smith trying to tell us something?

The answer is definitively yes as Smith officially comes out as gay and discusses love, relationships, and their effect on his music in an interview with The Fader. Here's an excerpt:

You sing a lot about love and relationships. What’s been your experience with love? I’ve never been in a relationship before. I’ve only been in unrequited relationships where people haven’t loved me back. I guess I’m a little bit attracted to that in a bad way. In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn’t felt love before. I’ve felt the bad things. And what’s a more powerful emotion: pain or happiness?

Does he know he largely inspired the album? He does. I told him about it recently, and obviously it was never going to go the way I wanted it to go, because he doesn’t love me. But it was good as a form of closure, to get it off my chest and tell him. I feel better for it. I feel almost like I signed off this part of my life where I keep giving myself to guys who are never going to love me back. It feels good to have interviews like this, to chat about it and put stuff to bed. It’s all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him.

This is the first time you’re speaking publicly about him. How comfortable are you to be open in this way now? I am comfortable with myself, and my life is amazing in that respect. I’m very comfortable and happy with everything. I just wanted to talk about him and have it out there. It’s about a guy and that’s what I wanted people to know—I want to be clear that that’s what it’s about.

Head over to The Fader for more! Congrats, Sam!

He looks like a young Marc Almond.

DAWG ugly FAGS! No wonder you have to succumb to fucking each other, as NO good looking women will have you.

You seem to spend a lot of time on this gay site rating the looks of gay men. I have the feeling I'm not the only one who thinks you "protest too much." I bet I know what you do behind the closed closet door when you find a picture of a hot guy you proclaim to hate. Do you keep a box of tissue in there with you?

Please don't tell me that gay doesn't have a look, when clearly it does. I live in one of the most densely populated cities in the United States. Probably the world. And gay DOES have look. You must have "the look" given your uppityness!

Anonymous, Gay does not have a look so stop using stereotype to describe a group of people as different as a rainbow, a leaf, a snowflake no two are alike

Some people don't need to announce that they are coming out our are gay.but on the other hand some people need to, to get everything out there. I can appreciate his honesty. And whether he knows it or not he's helping so many people who are just coming out or people like myself who have been through our are going through what he sings about. And being a singer myself this is how we express ourselves.

He looks gay. No surprise there. Let's throw him a parade. Sheesh!

Good for him. But it's getting to the point where not every schmo needs to announce their coming out to the public.
