Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy Regrets Jumping Into Marriage Equality Debate

Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy is acknowledging the mistakes he made my publicly speaking out against same-sex marriage.

Check out his comments to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Joe.My.God.):

"Every leader goes through different phases of maturity, growth and development and it helps by (recognizing) the mistakes that you make. And you learn from those mistakes. If not, you’re just a fool. I’m thankful that I lived through it and I learned a lot from it. Probably the elements that were stressful for me most is from our internal staff and from operators and how this may be affecting them. The bottom line is we have a responsibility here to keep the whole of the organization in mind and it has to take precedence over the personal expression and opinion on social issues." - Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy, telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he regrets having inserted his company into the same-sex marriage battle.  Earlier this month newly-released 2012 tax documents revealed that Chick-Fil-A had cut virtually all of its donations to anti-gay groups.

What do you think of Cathy's comments and his regrets? What's your current stance on Chick-Fil-A, Instincters?

You all will learn that gays are people an we spend money just like every one else in this world !!!!!!!  To bad you are loosing  money for your mistakes !!!!

I have to admit that I've taken it a bit personally since Cathy came out with his "guilty as charged". He actually thinks the world would be a better place without us and that the majority agrees with him. The groups he supports actually support Uganda's killing people for being gay. I just won't be happy until " Chick- fil-A" is out of business.

NO NO NO!! HYPOCRITE!  GAY OR STRAIGHT, MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS WON'T EVER GO THERE.  YOU LOST OUR BUSINESS AND RESPECT!!

He's done this before where he's sorry and regrets his bigotry, and then he jumps right back on the bigot train.

i wouldn't get too excited about this.

I just posted that comment about the Jersey Chick-Fil-A and forgot to add something. While I find it nice that they've cut most of their funding to those anti-gay groups, I still don't want to contribute any money to this company whose bigoted CEO will ultimately benefit from any and all customers spending money at their stores.

Thank you. Chad. I feel the same way.

We used to frequent the Chick-Fil-A in our mall in Jersey, probably 3-4 times per month. Ever since those hateful words came out of his mouth, my partner and I had one weak moment and had a meal there. But after all this time, we've realized that we don't really miss it all that much. We think the food is good (as far as mall food goes), but there are are so many other places we like. Other food tastes better when you know that you're not supporting hate. ;)

My family and I were regular patrons to Chick-Fil-A.... However, after his speech on bigotry? Well, none of my friends or family have spent a dollar at there store! Nuff Saiid!?

He and his company are PIGS.  Let them file Bankruptcy!!!!!!

As a vegetarian i wouldn't have eaten there anyway, but after his comments on equality it def put a nail that coffin for me.

You couldn't pay me to eat that crap! It's too late to take back what he said. We all know how he feels, and I will Never support a business that publicly comes out against any type of person. It's wrong period! People need to wake up and stop being complacent! This is prejudice to the max!

Have not ate there since he shared his opinion and don't plan on it anytime in my future. Would drive across town and stand in line before I would support this restaurant.

I love their food.

Will never eat there.

Don't you dare, "Charlie Brown"! "Lucy Van Pelt" (Dan Cathy) has already snapped the football away from you twice before; don't fall for it again!!

Well said!!

If Dan Cathy truly regrets inserting his company into the same-sex marriage debate, he can put his money where his mouth is, by donating an equal amount to LGBT rights groups as he did to certified hate groups that tell lies about LGBT people.

He is just trying to get the money he lost back screw him, if he had grown up through the process he would have stepped away from his position and resigned for his ignorance. You lost your money, said what you did, now pay for it.

I don't trust him. I've never eaten there and I never will. I think he's still giving money to anti gay groups under another name. Hopefully his business folds. What he regrets is that some of his business is hurting since he opened his mouth.

I still don't eat there, and intend to cut that restaurant out of my friend's list of eating places also.   If we work at it long enough and hard enough, we can put them out of business.   That is my personal goal.

Every time I pass one of this "guilty as charged" bigot's restaurants, I roll down my window and yell out: ENJOY YOUR HATE SANDWICHES!

To those that think Chick-Fil-A has only donated "a few thousand dollars" to anti-gay causes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinShape

"The WinShape Foundation is an Americancharitable endeavor of the fast-foodrestaurant chainChick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy and his family. WinShape also has a sister foundation that was started by Cathy's daughter Trudy and her husband John called Lifeshape."

[...]

"Since 2003, WinShape has donated over $5 million to several anti-gay groups, including Eagle Forum, Focus on the Family, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family Research Council, Exodus International and the Marriage & Family Legacy Fund. Approximately $2 million was given in 2009 and almost the same amount in 2010. WinShape's financial support of these groups has caused gay-rights advocates to denounce Chick-fil-A and protest against its restaurants and products on various college and university campuses including Northeastern University and NYU. Northeastern University's Student Senate voted on February 28, 2012 to cancel plans for an on-campus Chick-Fil-A restaurant and an online petition against the NYU franchise was also launched that same month.

bottom line started dropping so he started damage control. see this is were the right makes some fatal miscalculation they live in a bubble thinking every one feels like they do or they believe the hate mongers line that Americans over all support this kind of stance when as we all know they only represent 22% of the population. it a hard reality when you realize that the wealth and health of your company is built on excluding 80 of the population while creating very negative press to boot. I'm not saying this changes there minds but money after all is a powerful driver for the right i really think its about there only motivation as all the morality falls to the wayside were money is concerned. not for every bigot but for many of them.

Well said and i think you nailed on the head, this course of action could have been predicted.

He's still a bigot selling unhealthy food which causes major health problems.  For every LGBT person who stopped eating his filth and made healthier choices, he's improved the quality of life and life expectancy for those people he hates.

And, for the bible-thumping, wife-beating, hatred-spewing drones who "hate the sin" (and the sinners) while gobbling bacon, watching football and porn, cheating on their third and fourth spouses, and raising fat kids addled by drugs....keep on eating the filt from Dan Cathy.  You'll die sooner and the planet will be a better place.  Good luck on your "final reward"!

He's still a raging bigot.  Screw him and the chicken he rode in on.

Chick-Fil-A-CEO

HAHAHA!

You, sir, are my hero.

I have not eaten stepped foot in Chick-Fil-A in over a year, and honestly I have not missed it's presents in my life so in some ways I think he did me a great thing by saying he didn't want my business and it lessened my lunch choices  each day down to bringing a lunch or eating fast food I now enjoy bringing lunch and my lunch hour is an hour not standing in a line for 20 mi. and pounding down all that crap in my car on my way back to my cube farm everyday and feeling like I was sick and not to mention the every present expanding waistline ... so ya I say thanks for being so helpful and not wanting my fag money and busniess.

He didn't have to say anything and could have kept funding right wing groups - the demographics of his customer base was firmly behind him. I think it is a good first step

Prove it! Out your money where your ignorant mouth is!!! Anyone can back pedal and spout off lies to cover their idiotic statements! Why not "pay" for your mistakes and donate some major $ to the marriage equality campaign now! Appology is UNACCEPTED otherwise jack-off!

Too little too late
