Country Music Star Ty Herndon Comes Out As Gay

*UPDATED with video below.*

Country music star Ty Herndon has come out as a gay man in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE Magazine. Check out an excerpt:

"During an Anthony Robbins seminar, I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone's son or daughter or grandchild's life not be as difficult as mine has been," he tells PEOPLE. "Maybe they wouldn't have to go through as much pain and suffering. It's time to tell my truth."

That "truth" is about a part of himself he has kept secret for his entire career: "I'm an out, proud and happy gay man," the Nashville artist revealed to PEOPLE during a sit-down in New York Tuesday. (Herndon appears on Entertainment Tonight Thursday at 7 p.m. ET, his first TV interview about his journey.)

...

Though he understands his revelation is a big one, he views it as a beautiful starting point for the next chapter of his life.

"[Being gay] is just an addendum. I'm a gay man, and I'm looking forward to living the rest of my life authentically and happy," Herndon says.

Now that he's out, there are a lot of uncertainties ahead, from how fans will react to where his career will go. But "I'm feeling very blessed," Herndon says.

"I just want to show up for the causes that I believe in. And be able to walk down the street and hold this man's hand that will be my husband one day, and I know we'll have kids one day," he adds.

"I'm still the same person. Fans just know a little more about me now."

We like what we're seeing, Ty!!

Herndon opens up on his current relationship, his spirituality and life as a gay Christian, and the future of his country music career in PEOPLE's profile. It's definitely worth reading in full!

Congratulations, Ty!! Welcome to the team!

I've never cared either way. I was lucky enough to meet him once and he is a kind person. As long as he is happy and wish him all the best. Always have.

Having grown up country, a lover of country music, and and out and proud guy since I was 13... this moves me to tears! His courage to live OUT, and proud is monumental in the country music world, and my wish is that his country music fans and music industry will wrap their arms around this man and embrace him! What a blessing he is for opening doors and walking through them in the country music world.   So much love and respect for Ty,

One of Nashville's worst kept secrets!  EVERYONE knew he was gay for almost two decades!  I'm glad he finally came out though.

I think Ty Herndon's coming out might be more significant than we realize.  Unlike other closeted celebrities who avoided the question or claimed "privacy," this man knowingly told the public that he was straight and had women knowingly pretend to be his wives.  He did not try to "convert" himself or deny his homosexuality to himself and loved ones.  He purposefully participated in covering this up.  Given the industry he is in, I don't blame him nor am I upset with him for doing this.  Now, he's out and proud and I applaud him.

However, how we in the gay community react will probably determine if other celebrities (on the B+ scale or higher) who have done exactly what Mr. Herndon has done will also come out and acknowledge their truth.  So, let's keep things positive and welcome him with open arms and hope that others similarly situated will do the same.

I think I remember hearing about the Dallas Park thing.  Who knows, but I think we all had our suspicions before that.  Go Ty! being true to yourself and others is a wonderful step to take and one of the hardest. Best wishes in your future endeavors and write us some more hits!

He was arrested for soliciting sex in a Dallas area park years ago. It was spun into a "drug deal" at the time.

Harvey Milk said: "tell somebody you love" .......... and it seems a family member, a friend/acquaintance, a celebrity, an idol.........we are EVERYWHERE, and we love you even if you are straight.

I'm really happy for him, but I do hope that the closed minded country music fan base doesn't condemn him for telling his truth.

I hope that he has a great life and long career. I love him and his music!
