The Dalai Lama Approves Same-Sex Marriage, Says Bullying And Homophobia Is What's Wrong

The Dalai Lama has taken Pope Francis' softened approach to modern civil rights for the LGBT community and raised the stakes. Significantly.

In a sit down interview for Larry King Now, His Holiness says same-sex marriage is fine—it's really bullying and homophobia that is morally wrong.

When asked about homosexuality in general and gay rights (with a lead in from Russia's current War on Gays), the Dalai Lama responds:

"That's a personal matter. People who have a special tradition, you should follow according to your own tradition. ... But non-believer, that's up to them. Different form of sex? So long as it's safe, okay! And fully agreed, okay! Bullied? Abused? That's what is wrong. That's a violation of human rights."

When asked about same-sex marriage rights, the Dalai Lama replies:

"That's up to the countries' laws. It's okay, I think individual business. If a couple really feels that way, practical, satisfaction ... if both sides fully agree, then okay!"

His stand has always been based on one thing: "If it doesn't cause harm to others, it is ok." (i.e. consenting adults, who are in a better place for having solid healthy relationships. Never one person taking advantage of another). A overly vocal faction of the "gay mafia" ambushed him on this issue at his teaching in Arizona, as some people wanted to characterize him (and all spiritually minded people) as being anti-gay, 9 years ago. I had the pleasure of clearing up the purposeful misrepresentation...talk about drama queens! ;-) HHDL considered the issue thoughtfully, and after reading more on the topic (of the angst that most gay folks experience in daily life), he made a statement a couple years later that he had not known of that before; and he had sincere empathy for their suffering. This announcement is based on many years of thoughtful observation and sincere consideration..... You can trust him.

"My religion is Kindness." --The Dalai Lama

C'est Vrai ! :-D

Just as they do for all socially detrimental and deviant behavior, Jews advocate for homosexual marriage when it comes to other religious groups but NOT for themselves.. Buddhism is nothing but an irrelevant and pagan cult.

Jews advocate for homosexual marriage when it comes to other religious groups but for themselves. Buddhists should stay out of it because they're nothing but godless heathens.

Buddhist is only abotu love, kindness and caring for others .. Proud for H.H Dalia lama

Exactly, Don. Buddhist teachers do advocate love, in any way and as long as it's consentual. To be careful with one another. Then there's the difference between love and attachment, a whole different ballgame ;))

"That's a personal matter. People who have a special tradition, you should follow according to your own tradition. ... But non-believer, that's up to them. Different form of sex? So long as it's safe, okay! And fully agreed, okay! Bullied? Abused? That's what is wrong. That's a violation of human rights."
1. Wish His Holiness would stay away from sensitive subjects like this. It could be interpreted in ways that satisfy people's own inclinations.
2. "People should follow their tradition". This doesn't look like a ringing endorsement of gay rights including gay marriage.
3. "up to them" means what people do in privacy is their business. Notice the 'not my business' tone from the Dalai Lama. Again, not an enthusiastic support.
4. 'Bully' and 'Abuse' seems to mean unhealthy homosexual relationships that happen such as clergy abuses and not homophobia. This follows His earlier sentiment that as long as same sex relationships are safe, He doesn't see any problem. So the author has clearly misinterpreted the Dalai Lama or misunderstood the Dalai Lama.

Dude, you need to get a life....and get off of things that do not concern you. The Dalai Lama has an interpreter, a very smart man.... He knows better than to make up stuff.  Do You? "Ayak Tsang" on FB?

Dear Wazayak,

Almost everyone ( except you!) can clearly understand His Holiness` view on Homosexuality. He is NOT anti-gay. You fail to understand even simple English spoken by the Dalai Lama & you have been trying so very hard to interpret his words in a negative fashion . You are entitled to your biased interpretation . It betrays an Anti-gay attitude. Unfortunately, there are people like you whom even a wise man like the Dalai lama cannot convince !

Chye tan

With utmost respect, I think you've misunderstood.

"tradition' in Buddhist parlance, can be translated better for the western mind as 'religion'. Buddhism is an opt-in religion, really, and what he means is, "if you've opted in to a certain religion or tradition, follow the rules." For instance, the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition bars monks from all sexual relations.

Also, i think he means that bullying and abusing people because they're gay is wrong.

Proud to be his follower and a devout Buddhist.

The Dalai Lama hisself a gay, so what a so surprise ?

What the heck are you saying @Gorgeous...

You don't have any idea about His Holiness & he are pointing him.. Better learn about him & you will know,

I think that this is fantastic, it seems to me that some religions are reaching a higher way of thinking  and that once the fanatics realize they are taking the love of God and changing it into a lie, and that they are not supported by other religious leaders, then maybe they will come to the conclusion that they are wrong, or maybe some of them.  Look how long it took for some people in the civil rights era to come around.  I remember when mixed couples came about when I was younger, people didn't understand something they grew up thinking was wrong, but in time the current generation will change, and the haters will be the minority.  I believe love and positive thinking will always win.

I don't think you all really understand what he is saying. Similarly to fundamentalist Christians, he doesn't believe that you can be a practicing Buddhist and gay, or at least not a good one without giving up romantic and sexual love entirely and forever. What is sympathetic about him is that he really does understand the concept of separation of church/temple/mosque and state, and human rights.
He doesn't seem to be on a personal vendetta against homosexuality, but he can't reconcile it with his religion, even though there are Buddhist denominations that have no problem with it.

The Buddhist view presently is that sex is something that is performed within a stable relationship for procreation or for a monk it's celibacy. Most westerners would find this hard. If you don't agree or live a different way of life DL hasn't a problem with it. In terms of equality everyone is free to establish their own moral code of conduct when it comes to sex. No one has to reconcile themselves to a belief they don't agree with. We can have different views and we don't have to discriminate against each other.

Suzanne, where in the Buddhist writings does it say that you cannot be a practicing Buddhist and be gay.... And, where in the Dalai Lama's writings or comments does he say you cannot be gay and a practicing Buddhist??

Sincerely,

Don McCain
