Elton John Responds To Russian President Vladimir Putin's Comments

We reported earlier this week that Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed to not only have gay friends but also that he doesn't care about a person's sexuality. In the same breath of hot air, Putin mentioned Elton John as one of the "accomplished" gay people that he's okay with. The Rocket Man got wind of the odd remarks and has issued a statement of his own in the hopes of holding Putin to his word.

Reads Elton's statement:

The people I met in Moscow – gay men and lesbians in their 20′s, 30′s and 40′s - told me stories about receiving threats from vigilante groups who would ‘cure’ them of homosexuality by dousing them with urine or beating them up. One young man was stalked outside a gay club by someone posing as a taxi driver who tried to garrotte him with a guitar string because he was a “sodomite”. Everyone shared stories of verbal and physical abuse – at work, in bars and restaurants or in the street – since the legislation came into force last June. And, some of the vital work providing HIV prevention information to the gay community has been labelled “homosexual propaganda” and shut down.

It was very clear to me that, although foreigners like myself who are visiting Russia are not affected by this new law (and President Putin has recently confirmed this), it is a very different story for those living inside the country. As Maria Maksakova told her fellow Russian MPs last month: “We are seeing extremely negative consequences as a result of this law, with the growth of hate crimes.”

President Putin asserts that this was not the intention, but it is undoubtedly the effect that this law has had by promoting misunderstanding and ignorance. In particular, it is very disappointing that the law explicitly links homosexuality with child sex abuse, which countless studies have shown to be conclusively wrong.

The people I met in Moscow were decent, kind, patriotic men and women who had no thought of forcing their sexuality on anyone. Whatever the intention of Russia’s homosexuality and paedophilia propaganda laws, I am absolutely clear from my own personal experience that it is proving deeply dangerous to the LGBT community and deeply divisive to Russian society. I would welcome the opportunity to introduce President Putin to some Russians who deserve to be heard, and who deserve to be treated in their own country with the same respect and warm welcome that I received on my last visit.

Mixing HIV pills with cocaine....is not a good idea. Preach EJ....preach.

One of the biggest flake in the showbiz after Lady Gaga.

The so-called human right "hero" but at the same time went perform at Rush Limbaugh's wedding for US 1 million per gig.

It must be fun and empowering to be in that elitist right-wing club of America that spreads hate by claiming that it exists in others that don't go along with you, huh Elton? I would love to wind him up by smashing his cd collection to pieces with a wooden chair. Disgusting and pathetic hypocrite old hag.

Look in the mirror Elton, and repeat after me: "I am the enemy just like Putin!"

Agree..... which is why I was shocked that Lady GaGa was so keen to work with R Kelly for Do What U Want- a second single from her "ARTFLOP", and even more shocked by the result. I thought GaGa was an informed and thoughtful feminist. Or did she deliberately court Kelly so as to appear even more edgy and controversial? Her career is seemingly at a plateau and there's little a pop star can do anymore to truly shock. Cavorting with a rapist is perhaps the juice GaGa thoughtshe needed to gain some momentum. But I don't recall a SINGLE media outlet or web site commenting on their collaboration, except for Buzzfeed, which said, "It’s Official: Lady Gaga’s New Song Featuring R. Kelly Is The Best Thing". No backlash at all, but rather praise. I don't even know what else to say. And I would say Elton (foul mouthed, arrogant, bad mannered, horrible person. His outburst at Taipei airport in 2004 was disgraceful) who admits he was too 'self-absorbed' to deal with his cocaine and other addiction problems which ruined his golden years is NO better than Putin.

Putin needs to pull his head out of his ass and get an education and get rid of his anti-gay laws.

what is messed up that straight men a abuse young girls Russia but it silents. Only the president speak on about gays

If Elton was that against President Putin's anti gay laws why has he gone to Russia to play his music, I think the money is mightier than his morals. If he felt that strongly he could of canceled his show and that I feel would of made a bigger statement but no he took his money then opened his mouth. Hypocrite....just like Lady GaGa.

Personally, I think it's important that gay people are represented in a positive light at every possible opportunity.  In Russia & everywhere.  I don't know how many times EJ has visited, or performed in Russia, or what his motives were/are, but I do think it's important that established, recognizable & potentially revered LGBT, people & LGBT "friendly" people continue to go to Russia & other homophobic countries.  In large part to support the LGBT people in these countries, but also to show that we have equal value as human beings.  If our "celebrities" stay away from Russia, then Putin wins & the Russian LGBT community loses.

Homophobia is born out of ignorance & the cure for ignorance is education.  The more visible we are, the more apparent it is that there is no need for fear, or hate.  We have to be seen as we are & should not ever apologize for ourselves, but we have to be seen.  I am guessing that Elton John has his heart in the right place & is doing what he can to work towards global equality for all LGBT people.  We all should.

Ex-drug addict wants to chage Russia.....good luck.

Russian is still a 3rd world country. Period.

What do you mean by that? Fuck people who live in the third world?
