Former GOProud Director Jimmy LaSalvia Leaves Republican Party

Former GOProud executive director Jimmy LaSalvia has left the Republican party.

He made the announcement yesterday via his blog; LaSalvia writes:

Today, I joined the ranks of unaffiliated voters. I am every bit as conservative as I’ve always been, but I just can’t bring myself to carry the Republican label any longer. You see, I just don’t agree with the big-government ‘conservatives’ who run the party now.

The other reason I am leaving is the tolerance of bigotry in the GOP. The current leadership lacks the courage to stand up to it – I’m not sure they ever will.

I have worked hard to help to create an atmosphere on the right where conservatives can openly support gay Americans and even support same-sex marriage. In that effort, we have won, but there is more work to do to root out the anti-gay and other forms of bigotry in the party.

So I changed my voter registration today – “No Party.”

....

So, now I feel huge sense of freedom. I am an independent conservative. (That sounds much better than ‘gay Republican.’)

What do you think of this move by one of the most prominent (former) gay Republicans? Think we'll see others jumping ship?

He will remain a conservative as long as he continues to sport that outdated haircut

He still suxs from gloryholes! An independent conservative still has the denominator "conservative."

Notice that Mr. LaSalvia did not say he was running into the waiting arms of the gay Liberal Left. I join him in his excoriation of both parties.

It isn't all about gay issues all the time. Something is truly wrong when many of us find ourselves longing for a free market/free enterprise/economic freedom caucus in Congress.

I honestly don't understand how anybody could still support conservative economic principles.  There is now overwhelming evidence that trickle-down economics has lead to an obliteration of the middle class in the USA.  The rich have gotten richer, while just about everyone else has gotten poorer.

Unless you're one of those rich people and don't give a fuck about anyone else, it makes absolutely no sense.

Two words:  North Dakota.

No surprise for me.  He kissed the GOP's ass for so long, I guess he finally realized he didn't like the smell.  Whatever.

He did what he felt he had to do, in good conscience.  I think there will be others like him.  Welcome to "No Party", Jimmy!
