HBO Cancels Looking

Though many of us were more excited for a season 3 than we were for a season 2, it's looking like (no pun intended) Looking fans will have to be satisfied with a special to tie up loose ends as HBO has canceled the show.

HBO released a statement Wednesday morning sharing the news:

After two years of following Patrick and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love and lasting relationships, HBO will present the final chapter of their journey as a special. We look forward to sharing this adventure with the show's loyal fans.

Did HBO make the right call by canceling Looking two seasons in?

Even if Looking were being renewed for another season, the new season wouldn't air for more than 9 months!  What would you watch in the meantime on HBO? Only reruns of Looking? lol

I should have seen it coming from season 1 and it being based in San Francisco, but season two was a bigoted ignorant mess, that was written as if by a feminist or homophobe (though these days especially from other things coming out of San Fran they seem to be one in the same), so I'm grateful to see an end to the god awful tropey writing that seems to want damage gay people. I'm not sure what's worse, the writers on this Russel Davies or David Gaider for their self hating trope characters that in no way portray a well rounded human being or ability to learn and grow ever. They had the episode where the boys get criticized for using stereotypes in a tongue in cheek way, yet the opposite app and the whole show itself made every single gay man on that show melt down into a single dehumanizing stereotype.

Not that it's any worse then "Girls", that should have been canceled years ago, that disgusting sexual abuser shouldn't be given a platform for her narcissism. Telling they give her another season after the things she's owned up to and received no punishment for, and they cancel this first.

As for those saying they didn't show gay men as drug fuelled sex addicts? Wtf Show where you all watching because between there where many instances of just that.

I kinda hated the show in the beginning. I'm okay with cruising and bitching around but it was too much. Can u people (straight AND gay) realize that 100% of gay guys aren't horny 24/7 or feeling like sucking cocks everytime we go out? PLEASE!

Looks like Im canceling my subscription to HBO unless they decide to bring back "Looking".  I think we all as fans of the show and as a community should start a petition to encourage HBO to bring back "Looking" or be BOYCOTTED!!!!!  Who's In????

Wow, Looking, a well written and casted show is going to be truly missed. It has been a lone time since Queer as Folk, which was more drama, and not as true to life...I am very disappointed in HBO....

#HBOfail This is one of the few gay shows that I actually thought was well written and acted. It reminded me of far too many real life moments and I hope it gets picked up in some other way. And I still can't decide on Team Kevin or Team Richie!

Not surprised nor is the move unwarranted. Looking was lacking: a wearisome weekend stretched over two seasons.

Really loved the show, bought the Blu-Ray of season one, hope they issue season two on Blu-Ray, I have learned by experience that once a show is canceled it is pretty useless to ask that it be brought back, but I sure wish either they do bring it back or some other network will latch on to it, one can only dream

They make the wrong decision.  Like others here, it was the only show I watched.  Why keep HBO now?  A "Special" is simply not enough to "tie up loose ends".  Real relationships were actually developing.  I hope the creators/writers will be taking on a new real life show.  So sad.

It's quite disrespectful. The moment the series started to focus in the reality of a minority, the minority rating pushed the cancelation

This really makes me so sad, I loved looking. There was so much gay men could relate to in this day and age, how is it that QAF went for 5 seasons and was pretty much just porns and a lot of drugs. I liked QAF don't get me wrong, it's just looking is more realistic. HBO get your shit together

I'm not surprised, but, still a little saddened.  I thought it had grown leaps and bounds over the first season, and was really starting to hit its stride.  While the plotlines weren't all always that unique, they were unique to this viewing public because it dealt with regular, ordinary (i.e. complex 3 dimensional) gay men and their circle of family and friends.  It was as if you were watching real life play out, with us, the viewers on the sidelines.   Interestingly enough, I thought the Season 2 final episode was just right in tone and doesn't really need to be "tied up," because life doesn't always leave things that way.  Thought it was perfect that Doris & Dom realise they have to go their separate ways, but still have that connection to the core.  Richie has his Eddie, and Patrick, will just have to sort this his neurotic, judgemental ways to see whether he can make it work.  And, buzzing his hair, "getting a new look" so he can see HIMSELF in a different way, thus maybe trying this different way for him with Kevin, and going against his "moral compass" and having that done by Richie, well, I thought it was perfect in that way that life never is.  If they do this one off special and set them up together, I will have considered the 9 hours of my life that I spent watching Looking in the first place, wasted.

so very well written!  though I did find the show very white american gay. I won't ever find anything that quite looks like me on a screen. it would be refreshing that just for once I could see something remotely close to me.  rest in peace Looking.  it will be missed.

You're so right! The show was real and showed emotion and allowed them to be "themselves" instead of a glamorized version of what people think "gay" men are. They had real problems, jobs, and lives. Wish HBO was keeping it. Was refreshing to watch and will truly miss it.

How Ironic , my plan was to watch all past seasons from Queer as Folk - then move onto to "Looking" (due to all the awesome feedback from friends) and compare the "Times" , currently  on episode #28 and must admit Dallas TX  LGBTQ scene so much like QAF.. LOL ... So looking forward to pitching my series "Chubby Chase ME " Visual treatment completed

Big mistake, HBO!! The only downside to the show is that it was just 30 minutes each week!!! C'mon, characters and story lines were more real and not just focusing on the flamboyant or sex & drugs - relationship, family, careers, etc. - real stuff. Big mistake!!!

I agree with you 200%!  I've often thought that this should be a full hour show!  I'm really going to miss Patrick, Augustin and the others!  With the introduction of Eddie this season, I was so proud of such ground breaking content. What a shame that gold like this gets canceled when there are so many other shows that don't belong on the air.  *sigh.

Seriously HBO you just pissed off a lot of fucking people. I hate that all this world focuses on is the ratings and money because a lot of people related to this show and as a gay man it was something I could come to and see characters that are similar to who I am. I'm so dissapointed

While I was a big fan of Looking, HBO made the right call.  The ratings last season were low and they gave the show another season to gain viewers, which it did not.  This season had multiple episodes with less than 200,000 viewers.  This was a business decision, it has nothing to do with their support for the LGBT community.  Be happy that HBO is even willing to put more money into it and produce a movie to conclude the season.

Looking, for me, is way better gay show than Queer as Folk and even that campy Dante's Cove.

The show did not primarily focused on sex and nudity but rather the lives of these 3 friends.

It is a shame HBO is cancelling the show. I hope other networks would save it.

Bummed,I really liked the show...........and like in every series it has it's flaws, but it was so good to see relatable characters and their situations, gay characters, yes it didn't always show every aspect of gay life but what series in any genre of anything ever does? We have as a community almost nothing to pick from, and in the mainstream media even less/if any at all (nothing comes to mind). We live off heterosexual drama and comedy that we work into our own aspect of life. Statements like "that so gay", or "if it was me and that was my man".......I like it when it's about us-gays.......when we don't have to say it's so gay because it is and it is our men.................feels like home, not so lonely. I do hope LOGO or Netflix sees the potential in picking it up.
