HGTV Cancels Reality Show Starring Homophobic Activists After Uproar

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. HGTV, America's third LGBT network, has pulled the plug on Flip It Forward, a real estate reality show starring David and Jason Benham.

Today's announcement comes on the heels of Right Wing Watch's profile of the Benham family's extremism.

Right Wing Watch reports:

David Benham, led a prayer rally — Charlotte 7:14 — outside of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2012, which he told conservative radio host Janet Mefferd was needed to stop “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and “demonic ideologies tak[ing] our universities and our public school systems”

He told Mefferd that his brother Jason joined him in organizing the DNC prayer protest.

The Benham's backstory quickly spread across the Internet and inflamed outrage toward HGTV for picking up homophobe's reality show. On Wednesday, HGTV took to its Facebook page to announce that the show has been canceled.

I would suck off BOTH these studs & swallow their loads, ANYTIME

LOL Christians are so amusing when they try to play victim. They are the biggest instigators on the planet.

Good for HGTV! Proud of the network

Bigotry costs in 2014. Dont want it to? well then don't be a bigot. Simple as that

So what everyone's saying is if they were advocates of gays that would be awesome, but if they support anything opposing it, ya know, freedom of speech, religion, etc, they're horrible, evil, hateful people who should be crushed? Isn't that the same treatment that the gays are fighting so hard against? Oh wait, I forgot, gays are now the new bullies!

So let's say .... I want the freedom to hate ... I say it's my religious right to hate .... Yes you can go home to the trailer and hate all day ... But it just may not work for ya when you wanna run for mayor of the trailer park ...yes it's your right to hate ... But when people say I don't like ya cause your a hater ... Who's fault is that ? Look I love tattoos ... If you wanna tattoo that's cool ... But if I don't hire the girl with a snake on her face to run my daycare am I prejudice? Look peeps here's the deal gays are not bully's it's just time for everyone to be a little smarter ....

....because idly standing by and letting ourselves be bullied, beaten and killed just wasn't working.

And as you can see, it works both ways. The gays have finally demonstrated their power and you must deal with it! SUCK IT UP~!!!! We got their asses off the show, right? Who has power now???!!!

Regarding your claim that gays are now the new bullies.  Here is the dictionary definition of bully:

a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker.

That's certainly not what's going on here.  What is going on is retaliation against Christian bullies.

No one said you can't believe what you want.  But when you try and force your beliefs onto others, or even attack others verbally, emotionally, politically, or what have you, for not following your beliefs, then you should expect retaliation.

Tom, it has come down to the fact that if you disagree with certain groups, in this case the gay community, then you will be ripped to shreds, verbally, financially, physically, etc. and my point is proven by the nasty verbal abuse I've received for my comment that I made here today. Take a moment to read them. It's terrible. We all have the right to stand up for what we believe in and we don't have to agree with everything that goes on in the world. While I don't agree with the gay life style I don't hate anyone. In fact I have gay friends and family members that I love dearly. I can disagree with them and they with me. BUT in recent times, it's not just a matter of being treated equally, it's gotten to the point of wanting special treatment. And some, not all, but some gay extremist have targeted people, whether Christian or not, that don't agree with them, and try to destroy their businesses, or compromise their faith by trying to force them to do things against their faith. Seems to me the gay community can picket, protest, bash and name call anyone they choose, which is the very behavior they say they've been a victim of. I've posted a comment that one of the brothers made in regards to the cancelation of their show on HGTV. I don't think they've been "judged" fairly.

UPDATE: 7:30 a.m. ET: The Benham brothers issued a statement early Thursday saying they are "saddened" by HGTV's decision.

"The first and last thought on our minds as we begin and end each day is; have we shined Christ's light today? Our faith is the fundamental calling in our lives, and the centerpiece of who we are. As Christians we are called to love our fellow man. Anyone who suggests that we hate homosexuals or people of other faiths is either misinformed or lying. Over the last decade, we've sold thousands of homes with the guiding principle of producing value and breathing life into each family that has crossed our path, and we do not, nor will we ever discriminate against people who do not share our views."

Seems to me that those who cry "judgemental" have been just that.

WAH, WAH, I'm a persecuted Christian who can't discriminate and judge other groups of people. WAH. Feel sorry for me.

Have a seat.

Karen, listen here, your fake martyr act won't work on us. Unless of course you want us to start proposing laws to keep you females in the kitchen where you belong. Want to go there? cuz we can

You don't even make sense. Go somewhere and happen.

Idiot. They have the right to say what they want and so do we. Free speech does not come without criticism or repercussions. The bottom line is, however, that we did not want to see such arrogant bigots on our television screens, much less banking in big bucks from it to donate to causes that hurts our freedom and our rights. Are you at all aware of all the gross hatred, discrimination, violence, abuse, subhuman treatment the gay community has historically had to endure?

A gay rights movement has started, and if you think it is out of no where and suddenly in your face... that is exactly why it started. The ignorance of who we are that has justified the subhuman treatment of human beings who are gay is criminal. It will be in your face until you become aware of who we are and cannot remain ignorant. Once you are no longer ignorant, it will not seem so much that we are "bullies" or "in your face" and it will become very apparent who the real bullies are.

Well it's obvious by your first word of attack by calling me an idiot that you are in fact a bully. YES I am aware of how gays have been treated and do not agree with it. But you're saying that if these guys stand up for what they believe, and I didn't see where they showed any HATE, then they can be fired, ostracized, and made fun of. AKA BULLYING!  You DEMAND that everyone agree with you and dare not disagree or there will be hell to pay. If you want to see a perfect example of who's being mistreated these days, being attacked in every way imaginable, you know, the way the gays have been treated, just take a look at Christians. You are a hypocrite. You are the bully.

Karen, No one is saying they have to be advocates of gays. And no one is trying to take away their freedom speech. If they want to publicly bash gays, that is there right, but, they have to be willing to pay the price. And really, "gays are the new bullies" Really?? Because they stand up for their rights to love and marry who they want, they are bully's?  Seems to me they are a strong group of people fighting for the same rights as straight folks. I would define a bully as someone who picks on someone else just because they are different.

But these two guys happen to be different from the gays. They don't happen to agree with them. It is their right. And it's not just matter of them wanting the same rights as straights anymore. It's "if you don't agree with me I'll ruin you" behavior, whether it's costing you your job or your business or having you expelled from school.

Karen, In an earlier comment you said you 'don't agree with the gay lifestyle' and in this comment you say these brothers 'don't agree with (gays)'.  I'm unclear as to what about my lifestyle you don't agree with.  My partner and I were together for 20 years.  We worked, we bought a home, we paid our taxes, we volunteered our time and talents for community services where we lived. We hosted family holiday gatherings, were generous and supportive to our nieces and nephews, and donated to charities.  For the last 12 of our years together my partner battled colon and liver cancer.  And he didn't do it alone. I fought it with him...side-by-side.  I accompanied him to every doctor's appointment.  I drove him to the emergency room in the middle of the night.  I picked him up after his chemotherapy treatments.  I flushed his drains and made sure he took his medications.  I cooked his meals and did his laundry.  I worked to keep our bills paid and our house in order.  He died 5 years ago at the age of 52 and I mourn him everyday.  And every day of my life I have heard from one source or another how I and people like me are sick and dangerous to our society.  I've heard some people say that gays marrying cheapens the sacred institution of marriage.  I don't understand how the lifestyle I describe above cheapens marriage when no one says the same about Newt Gingrich divorcing 2 sick wives or John Edwards and Arnold Schwartzenegger fathering children with women other than their wives.  No one is prevented from saying anything they want to say.  But I will not be told I can't respond to it.  And if that means that I (and many thousands of others) choose not to watch a TV program hosted by people who publicly denigrate me, so be it.

The gays? like THE BLACKS? You're one ignorant C-NT. And you know it. Hey, if you can disrespect gay people, you can handle being called what you are.

Aaaaand you just proved my point. Bravo, bravo!!! You're a disgrace to the gay community.

You cannot shield behind freedom of expression to attack members outside your ingroup. I believe their show would not have been canceled if they were just straight. The problem with these guys is that they are promoting hatred. If they don't like gays, then they just should stay away from gay people. Instead they are antagonizing the gay community. What is the reaction that you expect?

I think they have finally realized that when WE mobilize against something, we can truly make change. That is not an agenda. It is called survival. Also, kids don't deserve to be socialized in country that treats them this way when growing up (like I was). It causes major damage. The first thing a gay kid learns to do is lie. Shame, SHAME on people like these two with their perfect Osmond teeth and muscles and blond hair, hammering away at the least among us. I've got news for them, the scrawny kid from the small town that is getting beat up every day doesn't give a shit about these two men's "philosophy" or "religion". They care about survival and living a normal life. That will never be possible when being gay is seen as something that is wrong. Again, I say SHAME. They can disappear into the obscurity they came from.

I would like to have seen the show - but with the homophobia bit being front and centre.  That would have made good reality TV.

HGTV should go ahead, with the series, but have 2 gay designers host it. That would slap the Benham homophobes in their faces!!!

Liberty University.  ENOUGH said!

I don;t think anyone is saying because they look gay that it's an insult.   The commenter on this thread who equated it with people who encounter him in person being surprised that he's black because he doesn't sound black on the phone is projecting his own racial identity as a negative trait on to these decorators.  It's not an insult to gay men that those two blond boys look gay. They're nice looking and their vile religious homophobic behavior is a product of their internalized self hatred that hits them most severely when they're alone in the dark fighting the urge  to touch themselves while their mind wanders to the implications of their racquetball partner staring at them naked in the locker room mirror that afternoon.  That's what they're focused on but since they're not in sync with each other or open to those realities, they channel their hatred into the world.  HGTV stands for Homo GayTV so it's only a matter of time...

Well that was.....specific. Lol.

I don't like what I hear about these two guys either, but the "They look gay!" remarks aren't really an insult to them. It's insulting gay men. It's offensive when anyone says it. Gay or str8. Just as offensive as when someone meets me in person they say, "You didn't sound black on the phone!" It shouldn't be used as an insult. It makes us just as bad as any narrow minded homophobe.

They look gay, And i am going with the one in blue is the Top. Ive come to learn the more "meatier" one usually ends up looking like he should be a top and turns out to be a big Nelly bottom. Which is fine for me, cause im a total Switch. But seriously. its always such a buzz kill when they always turn out to be a bottom.

I'm confused!  But...whatever "the media" decides and tells us is "the truth" and whatever THESE guys want us to believe about THEM....that is, THEIR s8tness or whatever....well, just so I get to find out what all the flipping whatever is about and how I can make some extra cash on the side.....duh!!!! NOW what????

Two generic BREEDERS off a show. Good!

What the hell does that even mean? Cinco de Mayo was Monday. Are you STILL drinking??

Heteros are so damn BORING in all these shows anyways. Ugh. They all act the same stuff, robotic manner.

I smell INCEST

Well, you are half right. You smell.

They look GAY!?!?

"Attacking America"??? "Demonic ideas"??? I am straight and was raised Catholic and I still don't understand where homophobic people get their ideas from. In any case, I am glad the show was canceled. Freedom of expression does not equal freedom to fuel discrimination.

Yes, thank you Andrea. Getting support from the straight community is always welcome. Now could someone please fill me in on what the "Gay Agenda" is. I didn't get the memo. Does it have something to do with the leader of the gay mafia, Elton John? Hmmm? Lol.

Thank you Andrea :)  Well said.  On behalf of all the homos on here, we sure do appreciate your comment.

Good for HGTV. Branding is EVERYTHING and protecting your brand is the numbr one rule of a good business model.

Im a devoted fan to HGTV , and I am even more so now that they chose to take these bigoted jerks off, cause I too, would of stopped watching the channel. They you HGTV for removing them from your network, I will continue to be a devoted fan...

I'm addicted to HGTV! Very proud you guys took action. Live and let live or be cancelled....

HGTV should have known better to begin with. It's not like they didn't know who they are.

My gaydar went off when I saw their photos. Maybe my gaydar is broke? Or maybe they need to let go of their inhibitions and make love to each other!

Obviously closeted faggots.....I mean, just. LOOK. at them!!! Incestual butt fucking brothers. LOL

Hey Spence. Can I call you Spence? Good. "Incestual buttfucking brothers" would be a great name for a rock band. And, by the way, you're a homophobic jerk-off. You and your kind are what's killing this country. Have a great day.

There's so much coy homophobia in your comment that I don't know where YOU get off thinking you can pass judgment on anyone else. Get some therapy for your daddy issues pal

Wow, Spencer, You're classy.

I know, right? He puts the "ass" in classy, doesn't he?

I like watching HGTV and if they had move forward with this show - I would have totally stopped watching the channel.  So good move.

Way to go HGTV!!!

Good move for HGTV. Too bad the so called Christians don't realize how "un" Christian they're comments are.

Their comments are, NOT they're. They're is a contraction of "they are". "Christians don't realize how "un" Christian they are comments are" is poor grammar.

I know. I meant to write "their" comments. I noticed that after I sent it.
