This is wonderful news!

India’s Ministry of Sanitation recently issued guidelines that encourage trans people to use the public restroom of their choosing.

Said the ministry in a statement:

"They should be allowed to use the facility of their choice (men or women) in community or public toilets."

According to Gay Star News, the guidelines were issued to the Swachh Bharat Mission -Gramin – the Clean India Movement. The Indian government set up the mission in 2014 to ‘achieve universal sanitation’.

In the provided guidelines, the ministry calls on the Swachh Bharat to recruit trans people as ‘Swachhata Champions,’ and to help spread the message of sanitation around the country.

"Where suitable, their support can be enlisted in engaging communities, and their efforts duly recognized and honoured to break any stigma around them, and also to enable them to use facilities without any embarrassment."

That's not the only good news, as the southwestern state of Tamil Nadu has indicated that it will build more public toilets for trans people.

The state government, ordered by The Madras High Court, will build many of these toilets in urban areas with large trans communities.

The order reads:

"Since a larger issue is involved in this matter, we direct the petitioner to take the survey and submit a report facilitating the department [Corporation of Chennai] to take appropriate steps to build exclusive public toilets–cum-bathroom for third genders where they live in large numbers."
