Katya Opens Up About Her Battles With Drug Addiction

Our favorite Russian Drag Czarina, Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, recently sat for a very honest chat with RuPaul and Michelle Visage.

For the latest installment of Mama Ru's, "What's the Tee" podcast, Katya spoke frankly about her battles with addiction.

When she suffered a nervous breakdown while attending the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Katya, who out of drag goes by the name Brian McCook, explained that she used drugs to cope with the depression that followed.

“I’m thinking of suicide everyday because I can’t imagine at losing at life

“I started stealing speed from my roommate. I wanted to do drugs to do more, to live, to cope, to be happy.”

She added:

“I’ve been through hell on meth, but I’ve also been up in the clouds, and that’s why you do it.”

Katya first won our hearts when she ascended to the top five on season seven of RuPaul's Drag Race. And that adoration continued when she recently appeared on season two of All Stars.

Speaking of her return to the "werk room," she said:

“When Alaska walked in there the first thing I thought was ’f*ck, I cant win.

“The second thing was: ’oh, thank God’ because I felt free, the pressure was off. I cant have to win but I need to be able to do this well. And I did that and I was proud of myself.”

With the race now behind her, Katya is now working on her one woman show, Help Me, I’m Dying.
