Man Screaming Bible Verses Shoots Gay Man In Minneapolis LGBT Bar

A deranged man screaming anti-gay Bible verses shot a gay man visiting Minneapolis with a CO2-powered BB gun over the weekend.

The suspect, 43-year old Wayne Steven Odegard, somehow made it past the bouncer of the downtown gay bar, The Saloon. Once inside, Odegard began screaming Bible verses and shooting at patrons with his suped-up BB gun. Bouncer Tyler Erickson managed to tackle Odegard moments after he opened fire, but not before one of the patrons, a gay man visiting the city with his partner, was hit in the leg.

“He told me multiple times that I'm going to go to hell and he's going to bring me with him,” Erickson said. “He recited a biblical passage -- I think it's a Deuteronomy passage," Erickson told KMSP-TV News.

Erickson went on to tell reporters that Odegard was aiming at patrons' heads but missed. Luckily, the one shot that connected only resulted in minor injuries. “Even if the guy was shot with the same CO2 powered bb gun in the face it would've gone right through his cheek."

My manager, Tim, replied clarifying a few things. This article is ridiculously inaccurate, I am Tyler Erickson, the security guard that took the shooter down. First, he never aimed for the head as far as I am aware. Second, he never made it inside, he was outside the entire time on public property. Third, he was not "shouting" Bible verses, he uttered a Bible verse to me in hushed tones as I was pinning him down on the sidewalk waiting for police. Fourth, there are inferences that he shot multiple times, this is inaccurate. He shot ONCE and hit a patron in the leg out of the blue, without even making a comment towards the victim.

The author of this article really should reread the original story... http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/story/26651548/gay-couple-shot-by-bb-gun-outside-the-saloon

I will add that the Saloon is one of the safest bars downtown. It has never had any problems and has been prospering for 30+ years. This incident is more closely related as an isolated incident in a public space than an issue within the bar.

Its time to rethink security at LGBT Businesses in general. With the anti LGBT efforts happening around the world, it makes me nervous. I always check for my path out of a bar, restaurant and entertainment venue when I arrive. I also carefully pick a spot to stand or sit that is not directly in front of the entrance. Too many crazy things happen out there. With a little work maybe business owners could thwart an attempt.

Y'all stop blaming this crap on the Saloon, I lived in Minneapolis for over 23 years and I still visit there and the Saloon is by far one of the best LGBT estb there. Great staff and great patrons. It's very sad we have sick people in this world that can cause this type of crazy BS anywhere you go. I thank God no one was killed and feel very sorry for the young man that was shot in the leg. That fool with the gun will find his match one day and he will go to hell.

When will they start classifying religion as a mental illness?

Religion isn't the problem, this PERSON is the problem - there are plenty of "fanatics" in all aspects of life. Whether it be militia dumbasses who live in Idaho and think they're going to overthrow the government, or Atheists who can be equally fanatical. The problem the PERSON has a mental illness, not religion. There is fanaticism in all aspects of life, you can't just narrow it down to ONE thing and say it's religions fault, otherwise that makes you as bad as the people who do this sort of thing. I'm a Christian (and gay) therefore consider myself to be part of a religion...I definitely don't consider myself to be mentally ill.

I've never been there, but the establishment is irrelevant. Armed with even a normal BB gun, this fanatic could really have blinded someone, I've seen it happen. The patrons are fortunate he was a lousy shot and for the bouncers actions.

It's doubtful he will have to do time. Maybe he will get put in jail if he can't afford bail but will prolly happen is he will he get bail posted go out lay low for a while then show up for his hearing and get acquitted

Thank god he only had a BB gun.  Now he can make some new friends in the big house and preach to them all day.
