Now Sissy That Walk Against Gun Violence!
On March 24, 2018, the nation took the streets in the solidarity with the massive demonstration March for Our Lives. The marches united millions of people who want immediate gun control laws put in place in response to all the victims who have lost their lives due to mass shootings. Marchers walked with signs, chants, and demonstrations that begged that not one more life be taken due to the inability to regulate the NRA.
In response to the massacre of 49 people at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, FL in 2016, the organization Gays Against Guns (GAG) was formed. The organization has been active in “nonviolently breaking the gun industry’s chain of death, which includes investors, manufacturers, the NRA and politicians who block safer gun laws” according to their website.
Gun violence is indeed an LGBTQ issue and GAG states the following reasons:
The epidemic of gun violence disproportionately affects LGBTQ people. Most gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides and LGBTQ people are overrepresented among suicide victims. LBG youth are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than straight youth and 92% of transgender adults have attempted suicide by age 25 (The Trevor Project). Suicide attempts with guns are overwhelmingly lethal (Harvard School of Public Health).
LGBTQ people are also the most likely minority to be the victim of a hate crime (The New York Times). Up until the Las Vegas massacre in October, 2017, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history happened at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, which was space for LGBTQ people of color. Queer people continue to be unduly vulnerable to gun violence, especially in the swell of prejudice-based hate crimes since the election of Donald Trump (California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism).
During March for Our Lives, Gays Against Guns all over the nation joined marchers to show we want guns ground into glitter.
Here are some of the beautiful queer faces that sissied that walk to get the word out against guns:
