NYC Officially Recognizes 31 Gender Identities & Expressions

New York City's Commission on Human Rights has released a document that lists the 31 gender identity and expression types the city officially recognizes. The list, released ahead of the city's month-long LGBT Pride celebration, reinforces the city's respect and protection of one of the most vulnerable American minority groups.

"In New York City, it’s illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and gender expression in the workplace, in public spaces, and in housing," the new document reads. "The NYC Commission on Human Rights is committed to ensuring that transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers are treated with dignity and respect and without threat of discrimination or harassment."

Along with a primer on business owners and employees on how to respectfully treat all the gender expressions they may encounter is a list of 31 identities and expressions that the city officially recognizes. They include:

  1. Bi-Gendered

Here's my suggested meme....

"SEX is determined by what's between your LEGS.
GENDER is determined by what's between your EARS."

This article stinks of bogus, bullshit, fake news. At the very least it's a huge exaggeration designed to provoke a reaction. Has nobody noticed that 8 and 28 are both Gender Bender? 26 and 31 Androgyne and Androgynous are the same thing. 6 and 7 FTM is just the initials of Female to Male and the same is true of 10 and 11 MTF just being the initials of Male to Female. 15 Transsexual 16 Trans Person and 21 Trans are all the same thing! It's fake! It's simply telling certain people what they want to hear. I'm just surprised how many people seem to have fallen for it. It's reactionary fantasy! Don't buy into it!

#28 is a typo. It's supposed to be "Gender Blender." How this is distinct from #8, Gender Bender -- or just what distinctions there might be between any of the ones that you say are the same -- is as unclear to me as it is to you. I gather that the the Human Rights Commission is simply recognizing that these are terms various people use -- more semantic options than ontological categories. The difference between "androgyne" and "androgynous," for instance, would be up to the individual who identifies as one or the other. There will be some subtle connotation of one that feels more "right" for them. This, I think, is fine. People get to choose their own self-labels. The list will therefore need continual updating as people seek new ways of saying what and who they are.

I identify as a frying pan. It is offensive to me that people think that I am pansexual. It is a common misconception. I am not attracted to pans, I just am a pan.

Many of these are completely redundant. Why keep MTF, Hijra, and Male to Female as separate? And those are subcategories of transgender, too. Why keep subdividing groups in to smaller groups? It seems like it would put up more barriers instead of uniting people and making them feel like a community.

Where's Ulrichs' 'uranian' (male body, female psyche)? Still an incredibly accurate term.
