OPINION: Should the Spice Girls Reform?
Earlier last week, Posh, Sporty, Ginger, Baby and Scary set social media alight when they posted a selfie together, their first one in 6 years. Understandably, my gay little heart, as well as countless others, couldn't take it.
Having missed out on their 2007 reunion tour, I was determined to see them in any capacity in 2018.
Yesterday, rumors circulated that the Girls were to embark on another reunion tour, 11 years after their last, with sources claiming the girls know "its what the fans want".
Girl power is clearly not dead, with their first two albums and their greatest hits climbing back up the charts after the selfie post alone. The fan base is as strong and ravenous as ever, clearly, but I can't help but think, is it really the best idea?
The girls we once knew to stomp about in platform heels and bum skimming dresses are now much more mature women, with their priorities in a lot of different walks of life. they are not the same group that they were 22 years ago. Mel B has carved out a successful career as a talent show judge, Geri has expanded into TV presenting and baking, Melanie C is going strong as a solo act, Emma has a radio show, and Victoria has a fashion empire. Sure, they're icons, but are they really pop stars any more?
Pop music is ever changing, and their brand of bouncy, retro funk contrasts a little too much with the music landscape today, where tropical house, rap and acoustic guitars saturate the charts.
Thinking more and more about it, I'm just not sure if I'd want to see five women who don't really seem to want to be there, up on stage going through the motions for two hours. The reunion tour in 2007 was a fun throwback, but there was no plan to continue afterwards, and it felt more like a remembrance.
The spark they had back then isn't there now, and something so high profile seems like it may not end well for the girls.
We all love a bit of nostalgia, but has the Spice Girls time come and gone now? Is it time to put the union jack dress to rest?
