Orlando Cruz Is Defeated In Historic Title Fight
Saturday night's featherweight championship title fight ended in a dream deferred...for now.
Openly gay boxer Orlando Cruz was defeated by Orlando Salido for the vacant world title.
The pair went seven rounds before Salido succeeded in delivering a technical knock out (TKO).
Cruz had solid support with members of his team waving the rainbow flag in his corner (and Cruz sported rainbow colored attire).
Salido praised his opponent, saying:
"Cruz is strong and fast, and I had to fight with intelligence and put a lot of pressure on him," said Salido, who was ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the knockout. "This is the biggest moment of my life. My career has been like a roller coaster. I've had my ups and downs, but it's great to be back on top. It's a very big win."
On the TKO, Cruz says: "I went into the corner and he hit me with a good shot," Cruz said. "I thought the fight was close up until then. It was going back and forth."
Congratulations to both fighters for a hard fought fight! We know this isn't the end for Cruz and we look forward to him coming back even stronger!
