Outfest Los Angeles 2014: What Will You Be Watching??

Outfest Los Angeles is finally upon us and we can’t wait to see this year’s slate of LGBT films!

We’re hearing lots of murmurings regarding must-see films so for those of you that are planning to attend, here are some of the highlights! (We reserve the right to add to this list as Outfest unfolds between July 10-20!)

Kicking things off is the Opening Night Gala screening of Susanna Fogel’s Life Partners  starring Leighton Meester  (Gossip Girl), Gillian Jacobs (Community), and Adam Brody (The OC). Also look for what we hear is a scene-stealing appearance from Kate McKinnon (SNL)!

The Foxy Merkins, from director Madeleine Olnek, is getting buzz for potentially being the funniest film at the festival.

We’re also looking forward to what are being described as stand out performances from Ben Whishaw in Lilting and Bill Hader in The Skeleton Twins. Oh, and what about Robin Williams exploring a middle-aged man’s sexual awakening in Dito Montiel’s Boulevard?

Gabby Hoffman’s preparing to scare the crap out of all of us as “a pregnant lesbian confronted by an unspeakable evil” in Stewart Thorndike’s Lyle.

Look for a breakthrough performance from Frankie Valenti, who you may know as adult film performer Johnny Hazzard, as one of two estranged brothers in Wade Gasque’s drama Tiger Orange.

And while we’re on the topic of breakthroughs, Ghilherme Lobo (The Way He Looks), Tilda Cobham-Hervey (52 Tuesdays), and Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) are apparently not to be missed.

All the fun isn’t in narrative features—we’ll be checking out the queer comedy shorts in the “Tickled Pink” series including Glenn Gaylord’s If We Took A Holiday and Leonora Pitts’ God I Hope I Get It.

Documentary features are on the slate as well. LGBT night life king, Mario Diaz is front and center in Jon Bush’s Club King, as is Olympian Greg Louganis in Back On Board: Greg Louganis from Cheryl Furjanic.

Wrapping up Outfest will be Jack Plotnick’s Space Station 76, starring Matt Bomer, Liv Tyler, Marisa Coughlan and Patrick Wilson alongside Plotnick.  He had us at Bomer, but we’re certainly excited to celebrate the work of the talented Mr. Plotnick!
