Pastor Resigns From Church After Revealing She's Married To A Woman
Bishop Allyson Abrams resigned from her post as pastor at Zion Progress Baptist Church last week after revealing to her congregation that she is married to a woman.
Abrams, who served as a pastor for five years, married her wife Diana Williams in March in Iowa.
She explains that her decision to resign was in order to prevent division within the church.
"It really hurts me because I don’t want to be the reason for the church to split, and potentially for
family membersto be at odds with one another," she said.
"Therefore, I felt that it was in the best interest of everyone to resign."
Interestingly Abrams, who was previously married to a man, doesn't identify as gay.
She says, "I wasn’t just open to [a specific] gender, I was open to love in whatever way the Lord would bless me."
According to Gay Star News, Abrams has also resigned from positions at other faith-based organizations, stepping down as secretary for the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity.
Still, despite her resignation, Abrams does intend to lead a church in the future; she says: "God has called me to be a pastor."
What do you think of her decision to resign, Instincters?
