Police Arrest Phoenix LGBT Center Fire Suspect
Last week we reported on the terrible Phoenix LGBT Youth Center fire that was caught on surveillance.
As you might recall, authorities believed the arsonist to have been a former visitor to the youth center, who aged out of the program, last year.
From AZ Central:
Darren William Beach Jr., 26, was apprehended without incident and taken to the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail, according to fire Capt. Reda Bigler. He was booked on one count of arson of an occupied structure.
Phoenix fire arson investigators and Phoenix police conducted a joint investigation, Bigler said.
The one.n.ten youth center caught fire about 11 a.m. July 12, injuring no one but badly damaging supplies, electronics and the building itself.
After the fire, the center issued the following statement:
“Our youth whom we serve have been worried.
"Some are shaken. Our staff has been juggling the many issues that surrounded this loss with a great deal of professionalism, but also with heartache and long hours … Still, this news hurts.
The statement continues:
“We had no warning signals from [Beach] throughout his time with us.
“There was nothing to let on that he had anything against our organization.”
The Phoenix LGBT Youth Center intends to reopen in September, in a new location.
