Police To File Charges Against Satanists Who Performed Same-Sex Wedding At Phelps Gravesite

The group of self-proclaimed Satanists who performed a "pink wedding" ceremony on top of the grave site of the mother of Westboro founder Fred Phelps might soon face the Meridian, Mississippi police.

WTOK reports:

"Meridian Police have reached out and spoken to Mr. Arlinghaus of Magnolia Cemetery," says Captain Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department. "We are in the process now of constructing affidavits and warrants against these individuals, and we will have them arrested as soon as we can."

A group from New York's Satanic Temple made the trip to Meridian to protest the Westboro Baptist Church. There, they performed a ritual they call Pink Mass on the grave of Catherine Johnston, the mother of Westboro founder Fred Phelps, Jr. The ceremony involved two same-sex couples kissing over her grave. They then declared Catherine Johnston a lesbian in the afterlife.

"It is an unusual crime that we haven't come across to my knowledge in awhile," says Harper. "Not only does it violate a state and city ordinance, but it also violates the moral decency of a human being."

"They are not welcome to perform disrespectful ceremonies," says Bill Arlinghaus, owner of Magnolia Cemetery. "This is the actions of a few, and I don't want to give them overly too much attention because that's really what they're trying to seek."

The activists will face charges of trespassing, malicious mischief and indecent exposure, of which police say they have enough evidence to warrant arrests.

If these individuals get prosecuted then this world is a very backwards place. How can their actions be described as violating the moral decency of a human being when laid next to the actions of WBC?! This is some sort of friggin' joke. Go back to actually catching criminals.

Rose-Hill Magnolia Cemetery Association owns and operates the cemetery.  It is not a publicly owned and operated cemetery.  It is private, and so it is likely the charge of trespass will stand. The charges of malicious mischief and indecent exposure seem to rest on the fact that the ritual included a priest rubbing his scrotum on the tombstone. Under the Mississippi Code, malicious mischief can include injury to property.  If prosecutors can persuade a jury or judge to conclude that the sanctity of the gravesite has been injured by this act, it may stick, but inasmuch as the "damage" amounts to less than $500 it would be a misdemeanor.  Finally, there is no doubt that the priest's genitals were exposed, but under the Mississippi Code indecency only attaches when the act is in public (since the cemetery is private property it may not) or when others are present (as they were).  This also amounts to a misdemeanor.

No one's right to freely exercise their religion was infringed.  The ritual was performed.  Twice.  However, neither is the free exercise of one's religion a shield against prosecution.  Many religions once had elements of sacrifice.  Would anyone argue that practicing that religion should shield them from prosecution of murder?

Whatever happened to the First Amendment and the Second Amendment.  These people were just practicing their religion.  Just because you don't like their brand of religion doesn't mean you can use the government to suppress their religious expression.  As far as I know, graveyards are public land and no one needs permission to be on them.

HA! I mean, that is funny. HAHA! How does it feel? Huh Fred?

Those charges are bogus and wont stick....

You've got to appreciate the utter irony of this line, "...but it also violates the moral decency of a human being." As if anything that the despicable WBC does has an iota of so-called 'moral decency' about it! If they should be arrested, perhaps it should be for trespassing, but as far as I know, most cemeteries are public spaces, unless they are specially owned by a particular family/clan. But the rest is merely bullsh*t bluster on the part of the police and the cemetery administrator to my mind! Until the entire obnoxious Phelps gang of haters is prosecuted for their own heinous crimes against humanity and civility, I see no point in pursuing anyone else for their supposed 'wrong-doings'! Tit for tat, I say! I actually believe that old Freddie-boy himself is a big ole closet case faggot and is merely transferring his own self-hatred onto innocents for his deep-seated desires and wants! No one screams their protests louder than those who are the most guilty!
