Popes Reaffirm Opposition To Same-Sex Marriage In 'Encyclical' Text

Popes Francis and Benedict XVI have reaffirmed their opposition to same-sex marriage in what's being described as an unprecedented religious text drafted by both men.

The men collaborated on an "encyclical," which as described by AAP "are papal circular letters addressed to the clergy of the Roman Catholic Church that are intended to summarise a pontiff's thoughts on a particular aspect of Church life. Some of them have gone down in history as significant landmarks in Church history."

This encyclical was close to completion when Pope Benedict resigned from the papacy.

AAP writes:

Francis paid tribute to pope emeritus Benedict XVI in the encyclical, saying that the ex-pontiff had "almost completed" the text before stepping down in a historic resignation this year and that he himself had merely added "further contributions."

The 82-page text stresses that there is no contradiction between the Catholic faith and the modern world and calls for more dialogue with scientists, other religions and non-believers.

It also restates the Catholic Church's position on marriage saying it should be a "stable union of man and woman."

"This union is born of their love, as a sign and presence of God's own love, and of the acknowledgment and acceptance of the goodness of sexual differentiation," reads the text.

Thanks for clarifying, guys! Next.

Well I dont agree with them. However, i dont write off other aspects of these men as they are good men with good intentions. Why can we not disagree without having to resort to a type of thinking that closes them off from us. I have many friends with whom I have thoughts that differ from theirs. I still accept them and applaud their goodness.

I am a lapsed Catholic but I still believe in the goodness of these men. They come from an era that is widely foreign to ours. So be it.

I dont need their permission to be who I am. Nor their approval.
