RuPaul Speaks Out On 'Tranny' Controversy

Outspoken drag icon RuPaul was conspicuously silent in the midst of controversy over the use of the word "tranny" and the "She-Mail" segment on RuPaul's Drag Race. Well, no longer!

The superstar open up to Marc Maron on his WTF Podcast this week and shared his thoughts on the word and the ensuing controversy. When asked whether he was bothered by the word, Ru said, " No! I love the word tranny."

Following Meron's assertion that the transgender community was offended by the term Ru responded:

No, it is not the transsexual community. These are fringe people who are looking for story lines to strengthen their identity as victims. That is what we’re dealing with. It’s not the trans community, because most people who are trans have been through hell and high water and they know -- they've looked behind the curtain at Oz and went, 'Oh, this is all a f**king joke. But, some people haven't... You know, if your idea of happiness has to do with someone else changing what they say, what they do, you are in for a f**king hard-ass road.

Ru also discussed the "She-Mail" segment and the decision by Logo and Drag Race producers to edit and remove the phrase from episodes, saying:

My 32-year career speaks for itself. I dance to the beat of a different drummer. I believe that everybody, you can be whatever the hell you wanna be. I ain’t stopping you. But don’t you dare tell me what I can do or say. It’s just words. Yeah, words do hurt… You know what? … You need to get stronger. You really do, because you know what, if you think, if you’re upset by something I said, you have bigger problems than you think.

What do you think of Ru's stance, Instincters? You can hear RuPaul speak in full on the topic here:

I want to laugh because,
1. it is a show
2. it helps people
3. sorry that people are bitter because it's not called Trans race
4. bitters Tran queens get a life
5. start your own show if you really that bitter about it!
6. Rupaul pay them no mind. Tell them there's a door with the word exit on it. Tell them to read it and use it.

25 years ago we had to form patrols to protect club kids, trannys, drag queens, gays, lesbians etc from being attacked.  Now you can be free to be who you are now free to be who you are, but because you are so ignorant and uneducated to your own history, you don't understand RuPaul making drag respectable and mainstream 25 years ago, you wouldn't have the freedoms have today.  Pathetic.

The only thing worse than a drag queen is a nigger drag queen.

The reality is that society does in fact view drag queens as one of the lowest forms of existence, even below gays themselves.

Every drag queen is from some unfortunate family of white or ghetto trash with their hard luck stories of how they have "survived".

Every drag queen is addicted to that 15 millisecond of fame each week dancing for dollar bills.

Every drag queen will end up in a smoke filled apartment at 50 years of age, working a dead end retail or food service job at 50 years of age.

Rupal, the highest paid drag queen in the world has debt out the ass, making those minimum mortgage payments and such just to exist.

I'm not sure what "reality" you're speaking of, but the lowest form of existence actually is an ignorant, prejudiced, hateful bigot.

Congratulations fuckwit, you have the cultural intelligence of 4chan.

So, you are that 50 year old drag queen who is currently sitting in a smoke filled one room apt eating cat food. Don't you just hate you never had the talent to be like Rupaul? Poor you! I guess your Mom won't be bragging about you! Ha! Ha!

You shouldn't say every drag queen asshole cause there are a lot of straight people in the same situations as you r describing that's very mean of you to say it's only drag queens

Dude, you need ti get you bigot comments straight!!!

I didn't create the word faggot.  Historically, a faggot is just a bundle of sticks.  There are a lot of delusional faggots in this thread.  Nobody should be offended when I say that, because after all, I'm not offended by a word that historically means "bundle of sticks."  If you are offended at being called a faggot (the same slang word that is used when harassing, bullying, assaulting, and murdering you), then you are clearly just looking to extend your identity as a victim.  Grow up.  Can I get an amen?

NO. You can not get an Amen.

5 G's GOOD GOD GIRL GET A GRIP! I still have the episode with the He - Male or She-male challenge I downloaded it before all this shit happened, and I'm keeping it.

The term "Tranny" originally developed from the root word of Transvestite" which came about in the early 1900's, and due to narrow minded people who don't know the difference, later encompassed " Transexual" in the 1940's which became "Transgendered" in the 60's

I bet if they had a show with a majority heterosexual cast making fun of gays and using the word faggot --- I bet the gay community would have a problem then. But hey gay community, don't get mad, it was all in fun --- RIGHT?

Also unless you are part of the community who are you to tell them what they can or can't be offended by.

That's like a white person coming up to me, as a black male, and jokingly calling me the N-word and then condemning me for getting offended. Who the hell do you think you are?

And before I leave --- let me set one thing straight. Rupaul may dress up like a woman but he is NOT a part of the trans community --- so for him to have the audacity to dictate to a community, to which he has NO PART of, what they should and shouldn't be offended by is ridiculous!

I do have to agree with you on that MOUNTII

Well be a use you obviously do not know what the word "Tranny" means here is a HERstory lesson for you. Tranny is a slang word Encompassing all of the trans people TRANSgender TRANSvestite and TRANsexual. Mama Ru may not be transgendered but she is a man in a dress and therefore she has the right to decide if the word tranny is something to get offended by. And to top it off Ru has opened the eyes of many close minded people with her show and she should be aloud to keep on keeping on.. her way! She has brought many eyes on the lgbt community that wouldn't give a rats ass about equal rights with out her.

No, Ru has the right to determine if he is offended by it, not if anyone else is offended by it.  As a trans-woman I am.  But here is the real issue, to people not within the community it all means the same.  So to the average person on the street because I am transgender I am the same as a drag-queen.  Ru can use the word for himself if he want's but it would be nice if he would explain the differences to his audience and that not everyone loves the word tranny.

Great point Jenn

Amen to mama Ru, sorry not sorry for the few are just trying to relay on that to get back in track and get famous again, if u want to be a real woman there's not even room for you to discuss this because you're transitioning to be a woman, once that's done ure not longer part of the gay community, shouldn't affect you, especially because from the very beginning there is nothing wrong with it, there is not a bad intention behind, so get over ureself, the gay community have true fights and bigger issues to attend, thank you!

Can I getta Amen? Yes RuPaul, yes you can. Every single time. Thank you for all you do. Loved you your entire career Mama.

Listen and learn....and get a grip

Halleloo!!! I'm so with RuPaul on this 1. Kudo's to him for finally spilling these beans. I just wish they'd shut up and leave him alone. He didn't create the word, people spoke that word for years in the gay community then all of a sudden a few people come along and make an issue about it. Here's a read, find a bigger issue to preach about and stop crying over spilled milk. TRANNY TRANNY!!!

First of all, it's She-MAIL, not She-MALE. Get a grip, people. Just because words sound alike. That ain't nothing but the same camp I grew up with in the 60s an 70s applied to the digital age.

As for the use of 'tranny', does anyone really think that RuPaul is trying to offend any sexually or gender based community? Do you think Chaz Bono would be such a fan of the show.

I support RU. GO MAMA RU!

Amen Mama-Ru

THANK YOU RUPAUL! Good lort! and bring back the She-mail....Enough with everyone being so sensitive.

(Incidentally, it's Marc Maron, not Marc Meron. Just want people to be able to find the podcast easier if they're unfamiliar with it, because it's a really wonderful, inspiring interview.)

I dont like the word "Tranny" nor "Transgender", or any of Gay, Lesbian, Homo whatever.  but i do not get offfended by it either because i feel like none of those words really describe who i am and what i really feel inside. Like they all say, "It's just a word" and one thing i am certain is that I am a human so i only wanna live a worthy human life. That's all.

I am a out, loud and fucking proud TRANNY! I love that word and, in my dictionary, it will NEVER seize to exist! x

Completely agree with Ru here. Tranny is a word that came long before the sniveling little pricks nowadays who get offended by everything someone says. It's a word. YOU are the one who gives it power. I'm not offended by the word tranny, and I'm sure not offended by the word she-male. I'm a gay man. Granted, I am not a transexual and I don't do drag, but lighten the hell up you whiny ass people. You make the rest of us gay men look like fucking jerks.

You really don't have a place to say this then, because you obviously aren't going to get offended by the word tranny as you aren't transsexual. I am, but i am not offended by drag queens use of it, they have been faced with the word as a slur equally due to bigots not understanding the difference bwteen queens and trans people. Trans people still get called trannys by people who wish to do them harm, we should be focusing on that, not on drag queens who are entitled to reclaim the word just as trans people are (important to remember that there are trans people who are part of queen culture today, and the history they have shared)

I simply could not agree more with your articulation on the matter Damon. I think that if the word is going to be specifically directed to emotionally injure someone, then this is what needs to be focused on. Not the liberal use of the word as a term or endearment or entertainment jargon. It simply remains, in my humble opinion, a word that has the capability of being transferable; such as to be an insult.

As a gay man; I and countless others say: "Full-Shade OR Shady" - Girl, that's like saying you're a cunty bitch... But why does this not have the same effect as calling someone: 'shady or bitchy as a personal attack'? - Because it remains jargon within our LGBTQ culture. Much like the N***** word and its over use as jargon in Rap music... It remains a term of endearment.

End of RANT >.<

Rupaul is such an UGLY man! I can't imagine why anyone would fuck him, unless it is for the little bit of money he makes with his clownish drag routine.

The word tranny envokes in the minds of most gays and all straights a feeling of cheap, campyness that just SCREAMS "I AM FROM A BROKEN FAMILY, IN A TRAILER PARK IN BLOUNT COUNTY".

I mean think about this, how many trannies/drag queens have you ever known, that didn't have some sort of hard luck, tragic, white trash, ghetto story to tell of the misfortunes of their lives? ALL of them have these pathetic stories to tell.

Truly disgusting!

Rupaul, the highest paid drag queen of them all, lives in debt and mortgages. Drag is a dead end lifestyle.

Drag queens and trannies are absolutely worthless clowns seeking their 15 seconds of fame per week for DOLLAH DOLLAH BILLZ.

Dollah isn't in the English dictionary -- I'm sure you look as bad as your hairline - You know upon reading this, I felt as though you weren't held enough as a insufferable child. It's okay, do not give up your suicide.

Ha whoooo whats with the hate hiding something... im a tranny/drag queen in a little city called Liverpool in the UK. Im not white trash far from it....im highly educated high school college and university! Drag what ever you want to call it it is not all about the same thing for people, sometimes its art sometimes its love, sometimes its a deep need, sometimes sexual, sometimes yes for the fame. But i tell you this... its brought to me a look on the world that people like you will never have...i respect all the people on the world even the nasty homophobic sexist bigoted racist ones etc. Because im smart and rise above the base thinking of hate! No put that that in your pipe and smokeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it xXx

College and University eh?  - You'd think, at best being English, you're grammar would be cogent to that effect. LOL Thanks for the resume -- NO ONE believes you.

*Your

Lol! Your an idiot! Jump off a cliff HURRRRYYYY!

Embrace yourself..... Don't be a hater..... Sashay away... If don't like the show, Rupaul or Drag queens,  why do you care about it???? if not what you like ... Shhhhhhh.. Silence is golden...

Plenty dont and i dont know anyone who gets that thought when.they firat hear, tranny . Speakfor yourself

@KevDobbins35205 well, aren't you a big ball of F*** YOU!

I have nothing but sympathy for you, it must be hard keeping all that worthless bad attitude inside. Good luck with your life.

May we see your picture to see how beautiful you are? Only fair!

To: Kevdobbin35205

you are such a lonely person, who would eventually die and nobody's gona be at your funeral...every single person living in this world is a blessing, and your a pathetic excuse for being alive.

From: Tranny gurl

You really are a narrow minded idiot. That is all

All I have to say is live in our shoes... For a lot of us its not about the money cause to be honest some of us don't make much cause we donate it to charity.

Wow. You are a horrible person. You have no idea what these people have gone through, and now they are just being themselves. You have no right to say any of the shit you have said. I'm not saying you are wrong, because I don't know when either. It is THAT VERY REASON I shut my face (besides explaining to you why your comments are too arrogant), because I don't make ass hole comments without being well-informed on the matter. I know hundreds of people in the RHPS community who don't agree with what you say ALL straights and most gays feel towards the word "Tranny". We all just see it as a word. Also, I know PLENTY of drag queens who don't have a "poor me" sob story. They just enjoy it.
The fact that you have to put down Ru's physical appearance just means you have your own self-image issues, or you are just a horrible person. Either way, I wish you the best of luck getting that stick up your ass surgically removed.

I FEEL SO SORRY FOR YOU !!! I AM STRAIGHT ,BUT IF YOU WANT TO DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY G-D BLESS YOU!!! YOU MY FRIEND, YOU NEED TO FIND SOMEONE OR SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY !!! I WILL PRAY FOR YOU, YOU NEED IT!!!BLESSINGS....

Before you open your mouth check in with yourself. If it don't come from a place of love no love can come from it.....and as Ru says even 'Bitch' can come from a place of love. Big love to all Doug Faulkner x

Shemail and tranny should never have left the show, if you don't offend someone then you an't doing your job right, it"s just a show, a DRAG show. What next, stop all the swearing, come on its the 21st century, live and let live.

I'm offended that this is even an issue

You go Ru, I think you all rock and are all so talented. Many women could take notes from you all on how to actually be a lady!!

I'm trying!  If I ever learn how to act like a lady, it will be because of Ru Paul and all the other incredible Queens.

Love Ru!!! You brought positive attention to the community showing a exisistance of a community that is not to be ignored. These words come from a kind and dedicated person with a passionate heart.

I completely agree with Ru tranny and she male are drag terms that have been around longer than the trans community has had recognition its a drag term and nothing to do with the Trans Community they need to grow up and stop taking offense. At the end of the day its an affectionate term within the drag community I do have trans friends and I understand the terms can be used by haters towards them but really its a word you can't rewrite the language you need to just take the power of the word away. I use the word faggot to refer to myself and friends regularly in an affectionate way and when someone uses it as a derogatory term it doesn't have the power or shock value they expect any more. Though I don't feel anyone has the right to use word to make others feel bad Ru has never used these words in a bad way aimed at the Trans community but in an affectionate way in the drag world. The Trans community need to pick their battles more wisely it wasn't long ago they were up in arms in the UK that equal marriage had been allowed citing it had meant that their fight for new legislation which would allow them not to reveal their previous sex upon marriage was no longer a consideration by government. At the moment I have people I love that are trans that I class as my children, friends and family and even my best person at my upcoming wedding identifies on the spectrum of trans but prefers not to be assigned or pigeon holed to one sex so I will always fight for their rights but not at the expense of drag culture or any other culture. Equality is not about any community having greater consideration than another and the Trans community need to realize they are coming across as wanting special rights to tell the rest of the rainbow how to act and behave not equal rights to stand along side. Time we stopped giving words power its about how its used not the word itself.

I i just wanna say Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny Tranny!!!!!!!

Ru has broken down a lot of barriers for the trans community and this is the thanks she gets. It just goes to show how touchy some people can be. Good for Ru that she stands by who she is.

It really depends on who you ask. Tranny, trans, transgender, she-male, drag queen, drag performer some are offended and some aren't. You have to deal with it each individually. People that are trans however really need to get a grip on the fact that its becoming more open than ever before and are going to have realize that not everyone is familiar the so-called proper terminology. Its an educational process for both sides and it will take some time and patience.

Wotevs

I find it completely offensive that the Trans Community can pick on the other communities then get away with it but if we just say one lil thing wrong Boom its all fire and cannon balls blasting away, Honestly people you need to harden the up, Here in Australia One of our Drag Queens Sandy Bottom Was invited by Libra Tampon company to do a televised advertisement I watched it on You Tube however it was not released as it majorly upseted the Trans Community and they put a stop to it, There was nothing wrong with it... so keep your chin up and give delivery the pack of hormonal sooks She-mail Wake up calls!

I agree 999,999,999%.

I love Rupaul. Keep doing what your doing. Ignore the haters.

get off your soap box. people please girrrrrrrrrrl get over your selfs.mother ru has been an icon for us drag babys .the world does not need to be so snooty .you know what huntttttyyyys you got she mail.get over it .

WORK!

I find it funny that one of the biggest complainers was a contestant on RPDR and they never said anything then but now it's like *ppooossshhh!*

AMEN GURL...KEEP DOIN U!!

Fuck all haters. mama Ru rocks mwah lighten the fuck up and quit it with the PC bullshit.

Agree 100%

It's a bit hypocritical saying this though considering they did actually remove it from the show?

That's the whole point of this. RuRu was FORCED to take it off of her show because of all of this hype about her using words like Tranny and Shemail, etc. It's not hypocritical in the least. Ru is trying to defend his rights to the words he's been using throughout his entire career.

My wife is a beautiful transgender woman who has fully realised herself through drag and I have been blessed to be with her during her transition and all that goes with it. That said, we fully support and agree with Ru's words and live the camp competition that is Drag Race.

Maron. It's Marc MAron.

You go girl! Ru rules!!!

Yes Mamma.

Sock it to em!!

#outwithcarmen

Marc Maron, not Meron.

Mark Moron, got it.

America has lost its sense of humor. Everyone gets pissy if something is said they don't like. I support Ru in the decision to remain true.

RuPaul has all my respect. I love this bitch.

Amen ru I love you I hope ill be on one of ur seasons of rupauls dragrace

let have .......Chicks with Dicks Mail  would that be better than She Mail ??????

Love Ru.  He`s intelligent, witty, and what the hell, he`s a gorgeous tranny.

5 seasons and no issue, suddenly there was an issue. Why? Someone wanted their 15min of "fame" and to ruin the day for the show. They could have reached out to Ru in a mature way, but instead they played the victim card and threw a hissy fit! Some people seek victimhood as a way to avoid dealing with their own issues!

Thats right..drop a set and get over it

I agree. Rock on Ru!

Amen.
