Tennessee Hardware Store Puts Up "No Gays Allowed" Sign

Blowback from homophobes in the wake of the Supreme Court marriage equality ruling can be seen in Tennessee, where a hardware store owner has decided to ban LGBT customers.

The sign has been posted at Amyx Hardware and Roofing Supplies in Grainger County in eastern TN. Owner Jeff Amyx claims the sign and policy is now necessary because his religion has instructed him to be unneighborly toward a persecuted minority group.

Another sign Amyx has posted proves he knows nothing about the freedoms of speech and religion:

“They gladly stand for what they believe in, why can’t I?" Amyx told WBIR when pressed about his discriminatory policy. "They believe their way is right, I believe it’s wrong. But yet I’m going to take more persecution than them because I’m standing for what I believe in."

No word yet as to how Amyx Hardware thinks it will suss out the LGBTQ from the heterosexual customer base.

It's ok. Once all the gay folk and supporters start buying from Home Depot and Lowe's. This little hardware store will go out of business.

Close that business down !!  Hate is hate and that is a sign of discrimination.  Your business license is a "PUBLIC LICENSE" to do business to the public and you cannot pick and choose because of your faith unless your business was an establishment of religion.  Sorry, but you need to either close your business because of religious faith or open your doors to everyone.

How will they suss them out? It'll be those of us walking away and spending our dollars with Home Depot instead. Talk about stupid.

No one is threatening anyones speech or religion. But a business that exists to sell roofing shingles, assuming it is an LLC or incorporated, is not a living entity that practices religion. You are personally not obligated to serve anyone you don't want to. But your business is not a living entity that hides behind religion, and it needs to be able to accommodate everyone and is obligated to provide the service it was established to do. If the business can't do that properly, then your license, your LLC and your lease are going to be a target of those you victimize.

I say leave him to his devices.  After all he is not breaking any laws really.  Plus I like know exactly where not to spend my "gay" dollars.  Oh and by the way Mr Pastor, as a gay man I spend upwards of $4000 at hardware stores.  You of course won't see a penny of this.

This is a cunning ploy to increase custom. Now all the gays for miles around will go there to see if he can spot them.

In the end, this is the great thing about freedom of speech. NOW you know not to shop there. If they were forced to keep their opinion to themselves we wouldn't know.
