Texas Judge Leaves Republican Party Over GOP Homophobia

Bexar, Texas County Criminal Court Judge Carlo Key has given the Republican Party a pink slip in a video announcing his new allegiance to the Democrats. What prompted Key's change? The GOP's continued war against gay people.

"I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party. For too long, the Republican Party has been at war with itself. Rational Republican beliefs have given way to ideological character assassinations. Pragmatism and principal have been overtaken by pettiness and bigotry. Make no mistake: I have not left the Republican Party. It left me. I cannot tolerate a political party that demeans Texans based on their sexual orientation, the color of their skin or their economic status. I will not be a member of a Party in which hate speech elevates candidates for higher office rather than disqualifying them. I cannot place my name on the ballot for a political party that is proud to destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of federal workers over the vain attempt to repeal a law that would provide health care to millions of people throughout our country."

In the video, Key name checks San Antonio Councilwoman Elisa Chang, who came to our attention back in August for a string of homophobic incidents, including calling gays "disgusting."

Is the State of Texas beginning to turn blue?  One can only hope so.

I am made humble by the judge's comments. His actions offer me some hope that others will consider the current path of the GOP and elevate their objections to actions that overtake misguided allegiance to a place that has abandoned the American people. In a state like Texas, I'm not sure if he can win his re-election bid. If he does, it will be a second glimmer of hope to suggest that perhaps we have not lost our humanity, or that at least we might be able to reclaim it. Thank you Judge Key.

Thank u judge

Make that stand!
