Two Gay Dads Join White House Father's Day Celebration

Two gay dads, Kent and Diego Love-Ramirez are President Obama's special invited guests at today's Father's Day celebration on the White House South Lawn!

Kent and Diego, who live in Michigan, are the adoptive parents of two-year-old, Lucas.

They tell the Detroit Free Press

“For us, it’s especially meaningful,” Kent Love-Ramirez said. He had just taken Lucas to get a hair cut, held him to keep him from wiggling too much. “Because Michigan doesn’t have second parent adoption, we’re not both legally recognized as Lucas’ fathers. Only one of us is.”

“It’s nice that even though we don’t have legal recognition in our home state that the White House has seen fit to include us.”

And so the Lansing family, two gay dads and the son they adopted, plans to be at the midday celebration on the South Lawn of the White House on Friday, keeping their fingers crossed for a photo op with the president.

The invitation wasn’t entirely out of the blue. Kent and Diego Love-Ramirez volunteer with an organization called Family Equality Council. The White House came looking for names of “dynamic father leaders.” The Love-Ramirezes came to mind, in part because they had volunteered to set up a family space at the Michigan Pride Festival last year.

___________

It's great to see this family recognized. Now let's see their actual union recognized legally as adoptive co-parents and partners.
