Uganda Passes Bill That Can Punish Gays With Life In Prison

Uganda has passed legislation that could see homosexuals punished with life in prison for "aggravated homosexuality."

The new bill also criminalizes “the promotion or recognition” of homosexual relations “through or with the support of any government entity in Uganda or any other nongovernmental organization inside or outside the country.” (Think Russia's anti-gay propaganda legislation.)

It's all just in time for Christmas.

According to The New York Times:

Specifically, the law — officially titled the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009 — provides for a 14-year jail term for a first conviction and “imprisonment for life for the offense of aggravated homosexuality,” a Parliament announcement said.

“The bill aims at strengthening the nation’s capacity to deal with emerging internal and external threats to the traditional heterosexual family,” the announcement said, quoting a Parliament committee.

....

According to the announcement by Parliament on Friday, a legislative committee said “that there is need to protect the children and youth of Uganda who are vulnerable to sexual abuse and deviations as a result of cultural changes, uncensored information technologies, parentless child development settings and increasing attempts by homosexuals to raise children in homosexual relationships through adoption and foster care.”

We're a little unclear as to whether gay propaganda can also get people imprisoned for 14 years to life, or if it's the explicit act of gay sex that will get homosexuals life in prison.

In either case, it's clear that Uganda isn't tempering its stance on homosexuality. The only thing we can be moderately grateful for is that it appears the "Kill The Gays" legislation is off the table.

What do you think of these developments in Uganda, Instincters?

This is disgusting & horrific.  If governments reduce the rights of gay people & criminalize what is natural to us, it sets a precedent that we are less than other humans.  If we are seen as "less than" by governments & leaders, we become targets of hatred & violence.  It becomes acceptable to scorn, beat & even kill us.  A friend recently posted on FB an incredibly distressing video of 2 gay men literally being beaten to death in front of hundreds of people, including police, in Nigeria.  It seemed like everyone was in on it.  This happened this month.  I really wish I hadn't clicked the link.  It was horrifying.  I will never get over it.

Things are improving for LGBT people here in the States.  The government/law is increasingly more on our side, but there is still a long way to go.  The USA must lead the way in educating the world to the fact that LGBT people are no different than anyone else.  We deserve equal rights & equal treatment.  We cannot rest in this fight.  This is too important.  We are too important.  We need to get angry.  We need to be vocal & we need to demand equal treatment & respect in every corner of the world.

I realize that this is just a comment on an Instinct Magazine blog post & that most of the posts here are celebrating that Hugh Jackman took his shirt off, or a rugby team made a naked calendar, but I don't know what to do.  What can I do?  How can I help?  How can I stop this global injustice?  How?
