Veet Pulls Controversial Ad Labeled As Homophobic, Transphobic

Responding to outrage from the Internet and a plain lack of funny, Veet has pulled its latest hair-removal ad featuring two men waking up in bed together (which is normally a good thing).

Controversy's courted in the ad as it opens on a straight man who rubs his partner's leg only to realize—the horror!—that his partner has shunned hair removal for so long that she's now officially auditioning for a role on Looking

The ad plays on the supposed straight man's fear of anything even remotely gay. But it doesn't end there, it's a double whammy; even Veet's own press people admit the ad also extrapolated upon strict gender rules for women.

The official statement from Veet reads:

We just wanted to let everyone know, we get it – we’re women too. This idea came from women who told us that at the first hint of stubble, they felt like “dudes.” It was really simple and funny, we thought. To be honest, the 3 of us could really relate to these real-life moments and they made us laugh. Not everyone appreciated our sense of humor.

We know that women define femininity in different ways. Veet helps those who choose to stay smooth. Our intention was never, ever, to offend anyone, so we decided to rethink our campaign and remove those clips. Thank you for letting us know how you feel.

Here's the ad. What do you think? Was Veet right to pull it?

I think its funny! How in the world is this offensive??

that was not homophobic ... it was just LOL funny.

It made this old queen laugh. Some people just need to pull the stick out and get over themselves.

My problem with it isn't gay or transphobic, but it continues the stereo typing of how women's bodies SHOULD be...hint, not how they actually are.

Im gay and not offended at all , its not homophobic in any way and its very very funny :)
The only people likely to not like this ad would be homophobes.

I'm a gay man and I was amused. I don't see how this is at all anti-trans. If anyone should be offended its women who don't want to feel they should have to shave their legs n pits - but that will always be a hard sell.

Straight men don't like dudeness in a woman. Not really a controversial thought.

It was just another commercial to me.  But I am a gay gay.

I guess the problem is that the guy acts SO afraid, instead of just acting like he doesn't like the prickly.

it was a funny clip. come on, guys---lighten up! :D

I thought it was hilarious.  I'm a gay man and don't agree that they pulled the add.  It's well done. Maybe that was the plan all along. No publicity is bad publicity. It has just gone viral.

The funniest moment was when guy with the beard was looking at the other guy with come hither looks.  As I am typing, I am trying so hard not laugh to no avail.  This is what advertising is missing, it is called schtick!  This commercial in other countries would be hailed as the funniest ad of the year!

I thought it was funny when I saw it on TV...but I get where people were coming from who didn't like it.

I'm a gay man and didn't take offense to this at all.  I'd react the same way if I felt a woman's leg on me, lol!  The commercial isn't even slightly displaying homophobia.  Lighten up.

I thought it was funny as hell!

I thought it was funny.....next time they can make one with a sasquatch or bear or some other animal....

If there really are women who think, independent of any social messages, that a hint of naturally occurring body hair makes them 'dudes', they really ought to be (a) studying human biology and (b) getting psychiatric help.

That wasn't bad at all! Those feebleminded persons are such a pain in the ass. That was a great clip and idea. Ugh! Crap feeblemiinded persons!

Really! Getting upset over that! I thought it was amusing! I think we need to watch ourselves, in the LGBT etc... community, over losing our sense of humor.

I don't think it's funny, but I don't see any reason to pull it either.

I love it thought it was too funny watching it again

Loved it too!

They shouldnt of pulled it....its a funny advert it made me chuckle i just cant belive its been removed because of shallow minded tw**s :) x x x
